Brett Pesce, a huge part of their defense, went down with a lower-body injury in the 2nd and didn’t return. It was a non-contact injury. Brind’Amour touched on it during his post-game presser and said he would be evaluated tomorrow but that it doesn’t look good for him. That would be a huge loss. We all want an Islanders win or two at some point to take some steam away from the Canes but .....thats the best!! It's a song they should be used to singing after the stadium series game!!! Kick save and a beauty
Islanders "desperately holdin' on"..... Couldn't do it against us.... twice. And now apparently not against the Canes either. Was hoping they would dirty up Carolina a bit but it looks like that might be too much to hope for.
Flynn
Islanders had one fucking job.. after that collapse I see them going meekly in 4. Carolina needed to get battered in this one, it isn't happening.
Bugg
Was watching; Canes despite being down 3-1 were dominating. So I went on Caesars and wagered a little scratch on Canes at 5 to 1 mid 3rd. It worked out, though was shocked about the go ahead goal. Total collapse. We need this series to go 7 with some serious OT time; looking very doubtful. Ozzy
...and that's the ball game! Can't blow that one! This one's done....most likely a sweep now.
Sharpshooter
After that, I'll be surprised if the Islanders even make this a series. Honestly not surprised they came back. They are fast and explosive and were dominating the entire game. They got a big lead, but there was still a ton of time left.

Br4d
This one needs to go 6 or 7. The 'Canes are probably dragging at this point as Brind'Amour tries to skate their legs off for the 4th season in a row.

Would like to think fiery Patrick Roy manages to get his team to game 6 at least, but didn't look like it last night.
RJWantsTheCup
Why isn’t Sorokin playing? He’s their number 1 goalie.
Karan
It'll certainly be interesting to see if they turn back to Sorokin for Game 3, after benching him for Varlamov for the key games down the stretch and now Games 1/2. Unless they've lost confidence in him and are going to live/die by Varlamov.
phillyb
I’m also confused about the goalie situation. Wasn’t Sorokin their starter all season?
Karan
Good news: "Head coach Rod Brind'Amour said that Pesce's injury is "not looking good" and that he would be re-evaluated on Tuesday. It sounds like Pesce is going to miss some time, which would be a huge blow to the Hurricanes' blueline. " Need the Isles to win a couple more and drag this thing out to 7 and bang each other the fuck up in the process.

Roy does have history coaching Varlamov from their Colorado days, and seems to favor playing him more over Sorokin since he took over the coaching position.
phillyb
Didn't realize that. Thanks @Karan

Karan
Quote After riding Semyon Varlamov in their first two games, the Islanders are in a 0-2 series deficit and will turn to Sorokin between the pipes in game three. Varlamov stole starts from Sorokin down the stretch, eventually stealing the starting goalie position for the beginning of the playoffs.
