K'Andre Miller Suspended for Three Games for Spitting on Drew Doughty

Is there a non-slo-mo view of the incident? Because I don't see how it wasn't on purpose. His eyes were clearly in that direction. There was clearly a scuffle, so why would he be spitting anyway with a bunch of players right there (3 teammates included)? It sounds like full on damage control to protect Key's image from a dumb choice he made in the moment, but slo-mo doesn't always paint the full picture.

Looks like he was trying to sneak a loogy onto someone's jersey,  without them noticing. A very childish, punk kid, thing to do. He's totally looking at a Kings player. Maybe he hit Doughty on accident,  but he was trying to spit on someone.

Kinda like how players will squirt water bottles from the bench as play goes by. Just enough to get on an opponents jersey.

Edit: just watched again. Yeah no. Totally spit on him on purpose. Thought he'd get away with it.

Seems really out of character. No reason to not believe the kid. He isn't a punk and has no history of such things. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt on this one and trusting his track record.

I'm totally with you here. Somehow guys figure out how to spit 100's of times a game, 1000's a times per week across the league  and this never happens. Yet he somehow squarely hits the guy.  IMO would he do it again no, did he do it purposely this time, I'm going with yes. It was incredibly stupid, just disgraceful.

Yeah bad look for sure. Only adds to what has been a brutal stretch for him. And I’m sure that played a role in this actually happening. Not an excuse, just saying that the guy has to be frustrated with how bad he is playing.

Dumb mistake by a young guy. Learn from it and move on. Bad timing for sure, given he knows what the situation was player wise entering today’s game.

So I am going to speculate with no support.  My evidence is that this was out of character for Miller and sometimes players trash talk.  Maybe Doughty said something that crossed a line between acceptable trash talk and what Miller thought was unacceptable.  I won't speculate here but I can think of a few things that would have crossed the line for me when I was playing sports.  The problem everyone is having is with what Miller did.  If Miller dropped the gloves and fought Doughty then no one would care.  I am not defending the spiitting.  But I am saying unless Miller says what provoked him (unlikely... He will probably just take the NHL discipline) we don't have the whole story.

After Schneider breaks his ankle in Hartford, Miller accidently spits on Kane.  A fight ensues and Kane’s hip goes out.

Drury says he told Miller if he saw his name in another headline he was releasing him.

Miller lands in Philly because no one else wanted him.  He pairs with DeAngelo but finally gets his puck back.

My guess is the league takes this into account and they just give him a game.

Let's pretend roles were reversed and Doughty was the one who was spitting on Miller.  Your interpretation might be the same, that Doughty only deserved a game.  I don't have a strong opinion whether a fine is sufficient, or whether 1,2, or 3 game suspension is appropriate.  But maybe if a Ranger was the recipient of the spit, then some might have a different reaction.

I do think it is a slippery slope to read a player's intent into punishment.  My sense is the reason why the NHL hauls players in front of a disciplinary board for hearings is A. That procedure is in the collective bargaining agreement.  B.  It was agreed that players should have an opportunity to plead their case.  When the league has held a hearing, they have support for taking into account circumstances, explanations, other extenuating circumstances.

All parties probably just want this incident in the rear view window, and that is probably more important than the punishment.  If there was an injury that caused Doughty to miss time, than it would be a different story.
