Fiala Could be Traded Out of Minnesota

Michael Russo of The Athletic suggests that the Kevin Fiala situation in Minnesota is worth keeping an eye on. The snake-bitten forward has been pulled from his regular power-play duties and there seems to be a disconnect between him and the coach. Russo writes that the Wild’s cap situation is a tight one over the next few seasons and there’s a reason the club chose to go with an arbitrator’s ruling versus a long-term extension with the player.

Context on Fiala:

Quote

Even more than Fiala’s lack of scoring, coach Dean Evason does not seem to be happy with Fiala’s overall game. Fiala has a propensity for turnovers or an inattention to defensive responsibilities, and Evason, maybe because he’s comfortable doing so since their relationship dates to their days in Milwaukee, often shows Fiala tough love.

Something disturbed Evason during Thursday’s 7-2 rout of the Dallas Stars because Fiala played just three third-period shifts.

“He didn’t get lost, no. No,” Evason said Saturday morning when asked why Fiala sat for much of that period. “At that point in the game, we played other people.”

Fiala was removed from the power play in the third period Thursday.

Quote

This is all worth watching because Fiala already entered the season with something to prove, as the Wild essentially showed no desire whatsoever to sign him long-term in the offseason. They signed Eriksson Ek to an eight-year contract. They offered Kirill Kaprizov seven- and eight-year contracts before signing him for five years. But Fiala, despite scoring more goals and points than any Wild player in the past two seasons, had the club elect to take him to arbitration, not the other way around. The pulled lever of club-elected arbitration is a rarity in the NHL, and even though the sides ultimately settled on a one-year contract, the decision by the Wild spoke volumes.

Knowing how tight the Wild’s cap situation is over the next three years after buying out Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, and with it being so clear that there’s friction building between the player and team, it’s hard to see Fiala being long for this organization.

He’s a pending restricted free agent with the right to become an unrestricted free agent in 2023. If the Wild can’t afford him or just don’t want to afford him or commit to him, it’s very possible he’ll be traded, perhaps even soon because he’s not playing well and things are getting visibly uncomfortable between him and Evason.

Has there been any chatter about the possibility of the game vs. the Islanders being postponed on Wednesday? Friend just heard Boomer say on the radio earlier that it’s a possibility because of all of the issues the Islanders are having with COVID-19. Outside of that mention, I haven’t heard anything but it did cross my mind the other night seeing how many guys they have out.

As much as the Islanders have sucked, there's something about a decimated Islanders team with a losing record at their new arena that would make me fearful of them against the Rangers. That's a textbook upset game.

I thought the same thing.

Chris Kreider has more goals than Connor McDavid nearing the end of November.

Let that sink in.
