[RS #8] Rangers at Vancouver Canucks — Loser Gets the Rights to Kravtsov

Drew a Penalty

They won because of the two 5 on 3’s that were the result of 2 stupid penalties when already down a man.   Take the win and move on but there’s still work to do.  3rd game in a row I thought team defense was sloppy, but wins are wins.

Not speaking to the two games before this one, but no shame in last night not looking great. The long west road trips are always a grind, and Vancouver is off to a really good start. There weren’t a lot of quality chances at ES last night for either side.

Special teams battles are usually something the Rangers will win in the regular season.

The second penalties that made the 5 on 3's weren't even ones the refs could ignore if they wanted too.  Straight out of play on the first and too many men on the ice on the second.

The things I think bear watching at this point:

1.  Rangers were noticeably slower than the Canucks all night.  This is a team problem and it is going to bite us against the fast teams like the Devils and the 'Canes.  The SH massacre in the 3rd period was all about the Rangers inability to keep up with the play against certain players.

2.  There are still players having real trouble getting on the scoreboard.  Clearing Mika and Miller helped last night but we're going to be having a "should Blake Wheeler retire?" conversation in a couple of weeks if he's still trailing behind the play as much as he does right now.  Wheeler looked noticeably uncomfortable on the bench a couple of times when the cameras found him.  He knows he's not playing at a sustainable level right now and it is only a matter of time if he can't find it.   Kakko is working very hard to be as invisible as he is through 8 games.  The Rangers need to find an answer for him because "should Kaapo Kakko retire?" is not a thing.

3.  The Rangers defensive shell late thing is going to become a problem if they don't start playing more in the other team's end with a lead.  I really thought the Canucks were going to win this one because the ice was so tilted towards Shesterkin in the 3rd period *and* in OT.

If you missed this one, you missed a doozy!!!

A really hard fought game on all fronts by both teams.  But in the end the difference was #31.  He was damn good in regulation, but absolutely unreal in OT.  Those back to back saves were probably the best saves I've seen in my 50+ years of watching this game!

Credit Joe Mich for calling the Zibby goal in the 3rd....and here are the Top 11 nominees for last night's “Ozzy Quote of the GDT”, sponsored by the LIRR, who doesn't even make as many stops as Igor!!

@Ozzy’s balls are not gonna like DiGiuseppe on the 2nd line. Luckily it’s not our 2nd line.

Thanks for the updates on Braden Schneiders parents, Sam. Got any news on Stepans mom?

The refereeing to start the season would be better with an actual zebra on skates

Nice save Shesty! The man is single-handedly keeping the Rangers in this game. He closed his legs quicker than Keirik's wife after returning home from a night out with Ozzy.

Waiting for Sam to say "K'Andre Miller... no relation to JT..."

Nothiing quite like waking up to a Rangers win and morning wood

Probably the most entertaining game we seen in quite some time!  Great to see Foxy make up for a rather crappy play, coughing up that shorty, but shit happens!!

That's 4 in a row, gang!

…and the winning quote for tonight’s GDT goes to @Karan!  Who knew those brew buckets had been laced with Viagra???

On to Winnipeg, and another delayed start for Blake Wheeler night!

Easily the most exciting game of the season. Great to see Mika get off the schneid, he also had a few posts.

Not sure they entirely deserved this one.........but on the last game of a long trip, playing in Canada on a Saturday night against a team playing good hockey...You take the 2 points and don't look back. You have to be happy with the outcome of the road trip, better to stack points than not at this time of year.

That being said, I don't think you can be happy with the process. They have room to grow. There's clearly certain aspects of their game that are light years better or there were  adjustments obviously made (team D, zone entry/exits, special teams), but there are some still bad habits lingering. There is also a clear system in place that we can see, but the team has trouble executing at times and can get caught running around as a result.

So, they have some work to do, but the early results are encouraging. I think most of use expected a less impressive regular season while Laviolette's message wore them down over the course of the season, in time for the playoffs. But here we are heading into November with:

  • the 4th most points in the league
  • 1st in the Metro
  • 2nd in the NHL in GA/GP
  • 1st in the NHL in SA/GP

Work out the kinks and this team will be formidable. It's just under 10% of the season. Good chance they only get better, I think we've seen their worst.

Any reason to wait?

37-38 year olds can drop off very quickly.  Marty St.L for example.

He flurried against Edmonton and looked kinda dangerous but no points came out of it.  He needs to do that and put some numbers on the board or it is all over but the gold watch ceremony in Winnipeg.

Yup.

This is 100% a roster that’s good enough and has it in all the right places with a lot of talent to play with any team.

Coaching looks very good.

Lavvy hasn’t coached in the league for 20+ years and done what he’s done by accident.

Rest of coaching staff looks like it’s really reaching them too.

Theyll only get better too.

And this roster in terms of talent and distribution of such is right up the alley of Lavvy.

Its well configured.

Holes they may have are smaller and can be fixed.

Any explanation on why Panarin was glued to the bench for a good chunk of the start of OT?

They would have put him out second but laviolette likes to use two D on defensive draws in overtime and we had a couple of those to start
