Just horrendous. I fully expected the Canes to storm, but for 18 straight minutes? That's just garbage coaching.

A timeout might have been nice. A settle down boys, a breather, something.

Yup. Despite the choke and turtle job in the 3rd, there was still every chance to win this game 1-0. The Rangers need to learn to defend with the lead, and the coaching staff needs to shorten the bench at that stage. This one bites for sure, every opportunity to get the W tonight. And I think it stings especially more cause everyone knows the Rangers won't have it this easy the rest of this series.

The moment got a bit big for them. They played not to lose rather than to win.

on to Friday

Interesting to see what, if any, adjustments GG makes for game two.  Canes can be beat, Boston took them to seven, and it's Anti fucking Raanta in net, hopefully they all learn from this game and bring it for a full 60 on Friday.

Again, prevent defense only prevents one thing: you, from winning.

You know how you defend a 1-0 lead on the road in the playoffs? By scoring again.

Kakko was so good that game until the botched breakaway where he Gauthier’d it followed by the wide open net where he Strome’d it. He doesn’t have the confidence to come back from that. He’s gonna be trash rest of season.

Nah he still played well. He worst plays of the game were  both scoring chances. That’s awesome, but also really sucks.

Only one adjustment needed. Don't turtle. Do that and they'll be fine. Canes are beatable. Rangers had their number for 40:00 straight.

Something institutionally wrong with the rangers. No matter the coach or line up they just never play a full 60 mins. Obviously momentum ebbs and flows in games but it’s almost a guarantee the rangers don’t show up for at least one period.

Not easy to get the canes to play that poorly, for that long.
but the rangers had several chances in the 3rd, which is still a good sign … I guess.

more pucks on net.  Need to be hungry out there, and they didn’t have that tonight.

Carolina's the best defensive team in the league for a reason. You can't just suddenly turn it on against them, especially when they're surging and expect high danger scoring opportunities. The Rangers best chance to score again were the earlier opportunities they had. They blew it. But the game still was not lost at that point.

It was lost when they got caught running around, and Aho to get completely open in front of Shesty, instead of playing '5 men at home' defense. Plenty of other teams have successfully defended one-goal leads through entire periods in these playoffs. It can be done. Just not how the Rangers were going about trying to ride out the lead.

They let those Blake Bears climb right in.

The most annoying part is I had no expectations before the game and was almost sure they would lose, but they found a way to give me hope just to crush it.

Would've been much better if they just lost 6-1 instead.

Yup.

The Canes coasted for 2 periods, played with fury for much of the third, and got puck luck from a deflected goal in OT. Sure we missed an opportunity, as we won’t see another game like that. But we weren’t too far away from a win. If we do a better job finishing, and limit scoring opportunities for the Canes, we can still get the road split and go back to MSG 1-1.  They are favored for a reason but they still have to beat us four times.

The Rangers didn't need to turn it on in the 3rd period to defend a 1 goal lead....they needed to have some puck possession instead of chipping the puck out and giving it right back to Carolina.  And when they did have the puck they just dumped it in and let Carolina have it.
