“Obviously we have a little bit of an issue at the border. We have more Canadian teams than those other leagues, which is unique but, like, I’m sitting at home at Christmas watching the NBA playing at Madison Square Garden, and it’s like kind of weird to me.”

Strome, who tested positive for COVID-19 in October, acknowledged that “there’s a lot of hurdles” for the NHL to alter its protocols. But he stressed that most of his teammates — all of whom received the first two doses of approved vaccine shots — have been asymptomatic after testing positive. He also revealed that “some guys” on the Rangers have received a booster shot, but he wasn’t specific with the numbers.

Not sure if this will change too much unless Canada does something on their end. If they don't it will make it more frustrating.

US Officials Recommend Shorter COVID Isolation, Quarantine

Quote

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials on Monday cut isolation restrictions for Americans who catch the coronavirus from 10 to five days, and similarly shortened the time that close contacts need to quarantine.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said the guidance is in keeping with growing evidence that people with the coronavirus are most infectious in the two days before and three days after symptoms develop.

Quote

The decision also was driven by a recent surge in COVID-19 cases, propelled by the omicron variant.

Early research suggests omicron may cause milder illnesses than earlier versions of the coronavirus. But the sheer number of people becoming infected — and therefore having to isolate or quarantine — threatens to crush the ability of hospitals, airlines and other businesses to stay open, experts say.

'The game between the Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders at UBS Arena on Wednesday was postponed by the NHL due to COVID-19 concerns.

Nine other games were also postponed because of attendance restrictions in certain cities in Canada: the Pittsburgh Penguins at Ottawa Senators and Winnipeg Jets at Calgary Flames, each originally scheduled for Friday; the Carolina Hurricanes at Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 3; the Washington Capitals at Montreal Canadiens on Jan. 4; the Maple Leafs at Canadiens on Jan. 6; the Buffalo Sabres at Canadiens and Seattle Kraken at the Jets on Jan. 8; and the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Canadiens and the Minnesota Wild at the Jets on Jan. 10.'

Unless I am reading this wrong (and learned long ago that is possible) there were all of 52 COVID deaths in the US yesterday and 3 in Canada. Doesn't mean we should not be vigilant and smart, but does show the trend is from pandemic and to a  virus we will have to live with going forward. And "smart" clearly includes not going to China.

As to the stats; numbers of US and Canada deaths are up, but still nowhere near the numbers of last winter. Is that a function of typical seasonal viruses as people in temperate climates move indoors, get less fresh air and sunshine(and less vitamin D production)? South Africa, which is weeks ahead of us, is totally leveling off.

Last I looked, I couldn't find any stats on deaths in South Africa for omicron. But they did lift quarantines for certain people and shorten for others. And stopped contact tracing.

Dallas just added Jamie Benn, Luke Glendening, Ryan Suter, and a support staff to the list that also includes Radek Faksa, Jani Hakanpaa, Miro Heiskanen, Roope Hintz, Joel Kiviranta, Esa Lindell, Michael Raffle, Jason Robertson, and another two support staff members.

The list is a bit long. 11 NHLers.
