  1. It’s not simplistic it’s just the facts. Chalk it up to luck, mismanagement of the team when they reached contender status shortening their window, or whatever fact is it didn’t end with accomplishing the goal. If you’d goal is to be entertained and be competitive they unquestionably did both. At some point though after nearly a century of always chasing the top free agent would it be crazy to think that maybe there might be a better way, especially in the cap era. It’s not to say you can’t ever sign a guy but do they really even know what they have right now? It only matters because when things materialize they are very constrained with the moves they can make due to the cap. If Kakko and Kravtsov meet their expectations then I’m not sure the money spent on panarin wouldn’t be better spent elsewhere, like center or defense.
  2. You think they are getting bowers for Namestnikov or strome? It’s unlikely they take no money back for starters and they aren’t getting a good prospect to boot. Why would Colorado do that?
  3. I act like I want to do if differently because what’s been done in the past doesn’t work. Success is a cup. Bring competitive is great but at some point it needs to culminate in a championship. That’s the goal unless I’m missing something
  4. I don’t hate the deal. However saying what he could get doesn’t make it a good deal. It just means some jackass will sign him to a bad deal. Nobody gives a shit that shattenkirk could have got more years ago. Today he’s just a bad contract that strangles your team. Some other gm avoided that mistake because shattenkirk left more money on the table to come here. It’s all about placing a value on a player and if the player is priced out of that value you don’t acquire him in the first place or you trade them and get assets back. Being cap savy is what makes a team a perennial contender first and foremost
  5. Trouba contract isn’t half as bad as the other big one they gave out. Good defenseman cost big bucks and while it’s an overpay it’s possible he comes close to meeting its value. Panarin at the second highest paid guy in the league will never match value. It was a loser once the ink dried and it will be worse once this team shows how many holes they still have and no money to address them.
  6. Yup. It’s wash rinse repeat. 1 cup every 100 years doing the same god damn thing
  7. As soon as we get redden, sorry Gomez sorry drury sorry Richards sorry Dan Boyle sorry girardi sorry Staal sorry Smith sorry shattenkirk off the roster. Going forward everything will be fine. The rangers never get burned by long term deals.
  8. It’s a very good point and kind of goes to whoever is saying they don’t have a plan. It’s kind of like throw shit at a wall and see what sticks
  9. I’m surprised because with the ntc involved I would hope that would bring the aav down some. Seems like trouba got top dollar and trade protection to boot. Whatever.
  10. You’re probably right. And you are right about them pretty much always overpaying. Still doesn’t mean I can’t hope they don’t. I wonder how much of it because of the taxes here or because the rangers have always been known for being loose in the wallet? Maybe both. Anyway I do really like trouba and think he could get better, but damn that’s a lot for him. Expected though.
  11. I like trouba and hopefully he lives up to the deal. The rangers seem to have a constant stream of bad contracts. Once they are finally getting out from one they are already invested in the next one. Hopefully this isn’t the case but he’s not a number 1 guy. At least he hasn’t been yet. The extra million here and there compounded by buyouts and they will have problems.
  12. Just asking. This fan base is going to be ok with adding no players of substance for the next two years? Now your going to be patient? Patient after paying a guy 12 a year only to watch his prime years tick by until you find some cap room to surround him with some other adults. This should be fun to watch. Should last till the first good player is rumored on the market. This slam dunk will become a 50/50 argument by next summer.
  13. Maybe that?s where the term hell is being brought up. Maybe an overreaction but seems like something is going to give.
  14. Ahh there it is cap space the most premium asset. Also why is there all of a sudden going to be a team willing to take on smith? He cleared waivers over a year ago and I would imagine has been on the block ever since. If there was an asset they could package with him to move him why hasn’t that materialized in over a year? I guess there is always a price to move him but obviously that price is very high. It’s easy to state it as your fix, it’s much harder to pull off when the PlayStation is turned off
  15. I’m not concerned about next year and really never was. My argument from the beginning is that this team is realistically going to be a contender three to four years from now when the kids all grow into their adult bodies and game. At that point when the rangers are ready to contend and seriously be considered a favorite they will need to pay all these 21-24 year old players. At that point this slam dunk of a off season with panarin signing could cost them at the cost of having a 32 year old 12m contract. I know it’s way to forward thinking to be a legitimate thought here. Panarin no doubt helps right now but to what end? The end I’m concerned with is a cup. What I really didn’t even consider is the cap problem right now. I thought trading any of the players talked about even with salary retention wouldn’t matter towards the time frame or future cap. That is looking lesss likely as it seems there is no market for these guys for obvious reasons. The cap issue is a league wide concern and teams aren’t lining up to take on players who are worth far less than their cap hits. So to answer your question I don’t know who it’s going to cost. What I can tell you which is pretty obvious, is that any player making 12m is going to effect what else you can add or keep on your roster. The players you will lose directly (being able to keep) and indirectly (unable to attain) will be many. There are valid arguments both ways that it will be worth it in the end. We are all just projecting at this point, we will see. It’s to a lesser degree the same argument as hanks contract. Difference is hank was the premier goalie on the planet, proved it here, was home grown, and was unquestionably the backbone of this team capable of winning games on his own. Yet his contract hindered what the team could put around him during those contending years and is a drain on the cap now and the bill is coming due. I didn’t love it when he signed his contract but I understood it and can see the argument either way if it was worth it or not. Panarin is a wing and hopefully I’m proven brutally wrong. I just don’t think he’s in that tier of player that is worthy of his contract and especially the term. Of course that’s what it costs to swim in the ufa market. I just don’t think you have to jump in at least not until you can actually learn to swim. Most of the rangers roster is still taking swim lessons so the timing is my problem first and foremost
  16. Buying out shattenkirk Staal or smith damages the future. Trading assets packaged with these humps damages the future. They will probably have to do one or the other. Not sure which one is the option better. I will say I think they have to move kreider for picks or prospects. I didn’t think that before but it seems like the smart thing to do now.
  17. Funny the rangers have a projected 8-10 guys playing on elcs this year and are having cap problems. Yet it’s hard to understand the looming cap problems when all of those elcs need new contracts?
  18. It’s not. That’s a problem shared by a lot of teams. That’s not being woe is me that is being aware of reality. The contracts coming off the books is way overblown. Hanks 8m comes off the books but do you really think the rangers aren’t paying 4-5m for his replacement? Zibanejad is on a ridiculous contract and will need a massive raise in 3 years. The 8-10 elc guys now will all need raises. It’s all manageable but the rangers are going to be squeezed nonetheless. The rangers are betting on panarin being their lead guy who can playing the leading part for a cup team. I don’t see him as that. That is my opinion. How long until this board is lighting up with the need for a guy to play with panarin? We’ll see. Problem is even if that comes true the rangers will find it hard to make trades when squeezed by the cap
  19. I actually think my posts are pretty reserved. Woe is me? I’m not the one making the plan argument. If the fans are overreacting it’s not about this. It’s the hype about next season. The kids can really only disappoint at this point. Their age and experience is a footnote to a lot of people. While it’s possible one or two of the kids will perform up to expectations, 8-10 on the same team will not. There is going to be growing pains. who’s the next lias Anderson next summer? Career on life support according to the fan base before he’s able to buy a beer. The impact of panarin was and never will be only about him. Everybody should expect him to perform. What is the effect on the rest of the roster paying a wing 12m. I could argue it’s worse than paying your goalie 8m 5 years ago. Lastly the feeling that panarin takes pressure off the kids is backwards. His signing has elevated expectations for the team. Kakko and Kravtsov are right now projected in the top 6. If they need time to adjust which they probably will, how long until the fans gets impatient? In the end this isn’t decided in 2-3 weeks. It’s all about 2-3 years from now like it’s always has been. Hopefully the bet they made this summer pays off then. More than anything it just needs not to go bust.
  20. Shit is not on fire. Larry brooks wrote an article that people are reacting to here. I obviously wasn’t for the signing for the reasons we are just starting to see. But it happened and moves are going to have to come to get cap compliant. Our opinions won’t change because we knew the consequences. Others might who didn’t understand in the first place that it was never free. Regardless who is right or not may never be known but it’s sure as shot not going to be known now.
  21. On a positive note they got panarin. He should be good for 30pts and 20 rebounds a night.
  22. It is going to be a problem though. Money comes off soon but only to give to raises that will be due. The problem here is the rangers salary structure is screwy. They are heavily investing on the wing. Defense and center is what costs and if you don’t develop your own your going to need cap space to acquire it. The rangers are going to have 8-10 players on elcs this season and they have a cap problem. How do you not see the future problem when it’s already here and going to get worse if they buyout players.
