Tempe Voters Reject Coyotes Entertainment District and Arena; Relocation Next?

Had to think this was inevitable. Tilman Fertitia has been waiting for this moment, has actively pursued an NHL tenant at the Toyota Center - no reason to believe he won't swoop in here.

Good opportunity to bring the NHL to a rapidly growing city and to rebrand a visually strong brand that's absolutely synonymous with failure.

Arizona Coyotes deny report that team is for sale, moving to Houston

Quote

The Arizona Coyotes say they're staying put.

The team vehemently denied a Forbes report on Thursday citing an unnamed banking source that the Coyotes are up for sale "with the idea of [a] buyer eventually moving the team to a new arena in Houston."

Arizona quickly issued a statement in response.

"This is false. Totally false," the statement read. "We're not selling. We're not moving. The Coyotes are 100 percent committed to playing in Arizona."

Houston is the most overdue city, now that Seattle has a team.  Arizona would be fine, given an arena in the right location, which never seems to happen.  Unfortunately, Bettman and the league prefer to expansion (and fees) over sensible team transfers.

Are they? Houston has a lot of the same problems as Phoenix in terms of density and public transportation. Not to mention it's not a cold weather town where kids are pining to play hockey.

Arizona -> Houston makes literally no sense to me, but I would imagine some kind of research has been done.

MLS has been successful moving into niche markets and I wonder if the NHL should strike a balance between major and minor cities if relocation is in the cards.  If not that, you still have a lot of choices in the US and of course Quebec.

Moving the Coyotes fixes HRR. Expansion fees aren't considered HRR.

HRR improvements are split with all owners and all players. Expansion fees are split between owners. Which do you think the owners want?

Why not Wisconsin? They're a pretty big hockey state with a decent population and the cold weather. Think the current Wild and Blackhawks fans living their would go for their new team too.

Gonna be Utah, Draper specifically.  NHL has already been priming the market with preseason games here.  Fast growing population.  Big tech companies.  600 acres of prime real estate about to open up.  Draper mayor already publicly stating desire for a pro sports team.  Have the infrastructure for an AHL affiliate already in place.  Building another arena will aid in the State's goal of hosting another winter Olympics.  Just makes too much sense.

Not a chance. You can't sell moving a failing hockey team from Arizona to Utah. They'd sooner put 2 teams in Toronto.
