Anyone put on an addition? Wife and I are looking at adding about 400 sq ft family room and converting current into our master bedroom. Not sure what I am looking at cost wise yet, was hoping anyone could help out with ballpark expectations.

We have been trying for a year now except permit issues has forced us to be stopped since December 2020. Finally starting again coming January. We have about that much and while we are not adding foundation (just screened porch conversion) we are adding a bathroom, so if you are not adding a bathroom and are pouring foundation, it would probably run the same. Fairfield County area but price came out to 120k for a contractor to do it.

Does anyone know a place I can order Trex decking? I specifically need 8 16 ft boards of lava rock with squared edge. Lowes gets from Trex directly and I’m being told March at earliest although my guy at the pro desk is trying to hook me up since I previously spent 15k in materials already.

decksdirect.com has them in stock but wants 350 for shipping alone lol. Anotber place was 800 in shipping.

Did you try any lumber yards?  I know Kuiken Brothers Lumber in north jersey carries Trex material

My dishwasher just died. $500 in parts to fix, plus the $100 fee means I might as well get a new one. Anybody have experience with Bosch, Whirpool, or Maytag brands? Those are the ones I'm mainly looking at. Was told to steer clear of LG, GE, and Samsung.

Bosch.

I have a Bosch and it's unreal how quiet it is. I don't use it very often, but I am pretty happy with it when I do.

Just out of curiosity, have you YouTubed your problem and see if it is exactly something huge rather than a cheaper fix?

The last time I tried to fix a dishwasher by myself, it turned on but flooded the kitchen LOL. Issue is I can't even get it to turn on, so unless I can fix the panel and get it to run and see if anything else is broken, tough to diagnose. And the dispenser is 100% busted so that's a needed repair

Looks like you all swear by Bosch, I think it's a worthwhile investment to not have to worry about anything for a while once it's installed.

One question not asked is what type of water you have. Do you have well water and if so, how is it filtered.

I have well water with a reverse osmosis filter in line. My water is still hard as fuck and after time starts to stain some fixtures and the tub. I fear hooking up appliances like an icemaker because I'm sure the hard water will just cause damage to the fridge.

But there are appliances that you want that simply have to be hooked up to a water supply. Our new (3 years) Maytag washer (and dryer) has held up with our water so far.

A dishwasher is a must too. I recently replaced mine only due to the cosmetics of the one left in the house we bought 3 years ago. It was gross, it's handle was broken, yet not extremely old.

Long story short. They are all built like shit these days. In replacing mine I went midrange and wanted a maytag, but it wasn't in stock. Whirlpool is made by Maytag (as are a couple other brands), so I went with the price equivalent of the Maytag just in a Whirlpool.  It's been good so far. It's quiet and it does a good job cleaning.  Cycles seem long though, but as long as I don't have to see a pile of dishes I'm fine with it.

If you have well water or really really hard treated water, I'd fear going top dollar on a Bosch, only because of the thought of introducing a problematic substance (hard water)into a fine piece of equipment.

I think Bosch sizes are a little bit different too. Keep that in mind.

Also make sure that you have the clearance all around in your dishwashers existing location. I had an issue getting mine in due to the fact that the previous owner must have put new tile down while the dishwasher was in.  Getting the old one out wasn't an issue because fuck that thing and all of its intricate pieces underneath.  Putting the new one in was the issue.

Adjusting the legs and all, I couldn't get it in level front to back,  because of the kitchen floor tile is about 5/8 or higher than the bare unfinished floor in the space. I need to cut back or cut notches into the existing tile to get it level.

I have been using it that way for about a 2 months,  but I need to cut those tiles due to the fact that it should be level not just for looks, but it can start collecting water at the low point and start smelling.

Any advice on cutting existing tile from anyone would be appreciated.  I don't think I can fit an oscillating multi tool under there. Dremel?

One thing after another while owning a house, and it seriously comes in spurts just like when a famous person dies, it happens in 3s....

We had a leak from my daughters room radiator, that leaked into the dining room, so we scheduled to re-do the dining room with new windows since we had to get it painted which is suppose to start tomorrow.  Friggin dining room work will probably ending up costing me close to 10Gs just b/c we need new blinds, and my wife wants some new dining room furniture.

This AM, went to do some laundry, we got water on the floor in the basement.....pipe looks like it rusted out, and sprung a small stream of water spewing out of the pipe.

FML!!!!!

Anybody buy appliances from BJs or Costco before? BJs offers free delivery, haul away, and installation. Seems like a huge savings, but not sure the quality of their service.

No.

even with Home Depot and Lowe’s - yeah they install, but you figure these are guys that were  probably stuck with that job, not specialists or contractors, or they did be working better jobs paying more money doing those same tasks. But that’s here. Maybe all the best contractors work for Home Depot’s and Cosco in other parts of the country.

Good point, I didn't even think about that. I already have a partial payment for the appliance guy I hired to investigate, might be worth checking what their installation rate is. If it isn't too expensive after the last charges of service call, it might be worth it for someone that does this all day every day for a living to install it. Thanks Josh

Yeah that’s  good option, too, if you liked the guy.

i mean, it might be an easy hookup and they just need to lug it in and plug it in.

You can also ask the old people forum on NextDoor for local recommendations.

check reviews, regardless. I’m cheap but careful. Don’t want a shit installation that ruins the floor or causes other damage and expenses.
