The second power play unit has Jonny Brodzinski and Jimmy Vesey on it. Of course that unit isn't good.

I think it's too simple to point to one stat, especially one so devoid of context as 5-on-5 goal differential, and say they're not contenders.
They are who they are. They make their hay on the powerplay. It's not something that should just be tossed out. Yes the game is called differently in the playoffs, especially in playoff OT, but powerplays are still awarded. And I'll take a team that scores on 1 out of every 3 powerplays any day of the week.
Their 5v5 play is improved over last year, and we saw that early. I think they've struggled a bit at 5v5 lately because they're really feeling the lack of quality depth. Brodzinski - Bonino - Cuylle is just not a good enough 3rd line.
It's all this. Even Dom Luchadorxray at the Atheltic, an analytics purist, has caved to the notion that the Rangers are a model for a successful team because of their sustained success as a special teams and goaltending-propelled team. The question is whether they're the make of a championship-winning team.
QuoteThere are times when it’s OK to question whether a team can sustain its unconventional wins. But those questions are easily answered the longer a team can prove the strategy as conventional for itself. This is the third year pulling this off where the Rangers have had arguably a top-10 power play and penalty kill or better. That power play looks especially lethal with the way Artemi Panarin is playing and how they’ve looked with Fox at the helm (16.2 goals per 60). Combine that with a goalie you can practically set your watch to being elite and that’s enough.
In the earlier days of the analytics era, it felt like there were limited pathways to victory. In a lower-scoring environment, controlling the game at five-on-five meant controlling the league. That’s changed of late. More goals, stronger power plays and top-of-the-league parity have created more avenues toward success. The Rangers have consistently shown that in the last three seasons.
Puck possession is still king and we don’t want to be hasty in anointing a team for doing things differently. The difference between any questions about the Rangers in 2021-22 and now is they’ve built a track record. It works, enough to be a consistent 100-plus point team.
Now comes the hard part: Proving it works enough to win it all. With room for improvement at five-on-five and with their star goalie, their chance looks stronger than ever.

I think depth is by far the biggest hindrance at the moment. Beyond the third line being the equivalent of some AHL first lines, they've still got Wheeler playing on a top line that's beyond his physical capabilities. There's only so much this team can do when two guys above 35 are filling for two guys below 25. Bonino and Wheeler just don't have the legs to be the contributors they're being asked to be.

Yegor Sharangovich is someone who hasn't been mentioned that I'd look at. Calgary isn't pressed to make a decision about him the way Nashville is with Novak, but they're staring down a potential rebuild and really should be considering most anyone. Sharnagovich is 25 and plays all three forward positions. He has one more year at $3.1M. He's been playing first line RW for Calgary over the last few weeks and has been one of their more consistent players during that stretch (12 P in 14 GP). He's also been playing on the first powerplay unit and the second PK unit. He has 5 SHP on the season because he's part of a really dangerous PK unit with Coleman. He's the type of skilled Swiss Army knife the Rangers could use right now. There's also a little bit of a Buch vibe to him.
If not Sharangovich then go for someone like Novak.

Explosive aggressiveness looks like it's back on the menu.
He's listed at 6'1. I've seen him listed as tall as 6'2. He might be 6' and change. Gotta be aggressive.
I met him outside the Garden sometime early in his rookie season. He’s definitely closer to 5’11” - 6’0.” I’m 5’9” and he’s barely taller than me.- 1

But when we try to make plays at the blue line or try to force plays in at the top of the circles, especially with world-class players on the other team, it's not the best formula."

I agree they need better 3c, but Bonino isn't coming out of the line up. He wins draws and he's on of the top penalty killers. Pitlick is the odd man out.
Trocheck has been real good, but I still like his game on a more Fiesta grinding line like the 3rd. So with that Lindholm for the 2nd line is my first choice. Monahan would be my 2nd choice.
More fiesta?

Where were they last night? Fines and suspensions are great but where are they? There is no deterrent on this team and the league is really weak in this area.
I don't want to hear anyone complaining when the next ranger is injured due to a nasty/dirty hit. These types of hits have been coming regularly of late. Hope it doesn't happen at the end of the season.
This kid may be able to play. Not looking for a straight up old school enforcer which is why I posted the scouting report and stats.
You're watching the wrong era of hockey if you're expecting anyone to be a deterrent as has been mentioned.
What kind of response were you looking for? The team immediately reacted and Panarin ended up in the box because he jumped Pastrnak. Down 1-0 in a tight game after a recent spell of bad performances and they're supposed to what? Start gooning it up? The team responded in the moment, Pasta was kicked out of the game, and then they focused on beating Boston where it really mattered, the scoreboard. They wouldn't jeopardize any ability to come back in a game to get revenge.

Figured Nash already had been with the team and in a game (Washington). I believe he's doing well in the A too.
Nash is solid on draws decent defensively and can play physical/ drop the gloves. Would have been nice to go old school and sick the AHL call up on Wilson in that disaster.
Nash has two career fights. There is nothing old school about him. Edstrom is tougher.
-
Makes sense why he turned down Tortorella's pleas to become a power forward. He's too brittle to be one.
-
I feel like it's about time to shake the lines up a little bit. Might as well try something new because what they have has gone stale with their lack of depth. There's only so much this team can do with both Wheeler and Bonino in the top 9 so change that.
Panarin - Trocheck - Vesey
Cuylle - Zibanejad - Lafreniere
Kreider - Brodzinski - Wheeler
Goodrow - Bonino - Pitlick

You really don't. Robertson is the emptiest 6'4" and if you think Jones seems overwhelmed then Robertson is a full-blown panic attack.
-
40 minutes ago, Phil said:
OK, then shoot first and a half. My point is, you add him to Kreider and Zib, and he's the one firing it at the net.
He's at 5.08 shots per 60 which is about the same rate as Kakko. Vatrano is at 11.6 per 60. If you want a volume shooter there then pursue an actual volume shooter there. Duclair historically isn't that at all. He's a good fit there because he's fast and he goes to the net. He's not really comparable to Vatrano, though. Vatrano's volume rivals those of Jack Hughes, Jack Eichel, and Kyle Connor.
- 1
-
10 minutes ago, Phil said:
I didn't call anything on Duclair. I said he's the guy I'd look at because he makes so much sense as a shoot-first winger for Kreider-Zib. Duclair and Vatrano are the same player, for the most part. The biggest difference is Duclair is a UFA after this season. Vatrano has another year left, so the cost to get him double-retained is going to be higher. I also think it helps a ton that Mike Grier is the GM of the Sharks now.
Duke isn't a shoot-first winger by any means. He hasn't even averaged two shots per game over his career. What he brings is speed.
-
42 minutes ago, siddious said:

Nope. Robertson is way worse.
-
Why would the Rangers need a third team to eat Vatrano's salary when Anaheim can do that already?
