They definitely do. Prospects don't always pan out and Fowler won't be there forever.

Mintyukov has been there this season and is just injured. I’m pretty sure he’s what gave convinced them they’d be alright trading Drysdale. Zellweger is up and playing on their first pair now. I don’t think they need Jones that badly.

  2. 3 minutes ago, Pete said:

Zac Jones should be going the other way. The Ducks have zero offensive defenseman behind Fowler after trading Drysdale.

Jones and some picks should get it done. I'd be OK throwing in a Sykora/Berard level prospect.

Cuylle, Othmann, Perrault should be off the table in any deal for Vatrano and Henrique.

Zellweger is most definitely their offensive defenseman of future, and Mintyukov is there with him. Not sure they really have so much use for Jones.

Othmann reminds me a lot of Miller, with less playmaking ability.

Othmann's passing ability and just overall hockey intelligence are a bit underrated. I'm doubtful he'll ever be Miller and not more of a Saad, but the potential is in him thinking the game as highly as he does.

  4. These were Eliotte Friedman's exact words re: Tyler Johnson on 32 Thoughts.

    Quote

“I think the teams that lost out on Lindholm…whether it be the Rangers. Like the Rangers, I wondered if they’re gonna do two centers. One guy I wondered about for them is a guy like Tyler Johnson. Lots of experience. Doesn’t make a ton of money. I haven’t watched Johnson play a lot this year — that’s me playing the salary game as opposed to the fit game. That was a name I wondered.”

    Link

There's nothing else about connecting Tyler Johnson to the Rangers. Hell, this isn't even Friedge connecting Johnson to the Rangers so much as it is him coming up with an off-the-board idea. Notice how cagey Friedge is in his phrasing for even his standards.

Posts like "reading rumors about [x]" aren't verifiable. Let's be better about sourcing information. If you can read about something then you can also share the link to it.

The player isn't what's desperate, the anticipated cost is what makes it desperate.

If you're out in freezing weather, buying a hoodie doesn't make you desperate. Buying a $60 hoodie for $500 makes you desperate.

Exactly this. Given the state of the market, it seems like any trade for a center is going to cost an arm and a leg. If you're the Rangers and are going to be forced to pay, you might as well spend extra to get players with years. Drury and his pro scouts need to do their homework to make the best decision here — the best fit is unlikely to be one of the top five guys on Seravalli or whoever's trade board.

Thank god for Vancouver. The rangers cannot be making short sighted deals with a broken core. This team needs a major change not an addition around the margins.

IMO 2 of Fox, zib, panarin, and kreider need to be sent packing. Don’t care which 2 but the country club needs to close for repairs. The rangers need core guys who will drag others into a fight. These guys are not it

Where'd you go Capt? You were having such an active two hours.

Trying to log into Fatfrancesa instead?

    Or how about Cupalife?

  7. Friedge mentions Henrique twice here. He makes a lot of sense as a lower-cost option especially to round out that checking line with Cuylle and Kakko. Sam Carrick can fill in that 4th line center role that Friedge also mentions that they're in the hunt for. Both are strong centers with jam.

Use a separate deal to get an under-the-radar winger like how they acquired Vatrano two years ago. Maybe that's Duclair. Might be someone even more under the radar.

Hey @Drew a Penalty...If you get a chance, man...I wanted to get your input on the Mackey kid.  He looked like Will Cuylle, but as a defenseman.  I liked his game...albeit it's the first time I saw him play.

Sorry, I'm a little late here. As has been mentioned, Mackey is on the older side at 27, so the upside is limited, but what you get is a consistent depth defenseman with some grit. He's been one of Hartford's steadiest defenseman this season and is probably the more appropriate fit as the 7D over Jones. I don't want to overrate him but there's even a little more offense to his game than his stats would indicate. Hollowell, Brouillard, and Robertson all get powerplay time while Mackey receives none. He's low maintenance and high character which is exactly what you want out of a depth defenseman.

Never the less I will take another (cheaper) Trochek and Fast.

lol just trying to keep expectations reasonable for both. They're still useful players and more of what the team lacks, they're just not overtly aggressive. They're feistier than what's currently on the roster but a far cry from the actual killers out there.

Have loved this kid since game 1. If Othman can be as much of a pest as they say he might be as well then this team is suddenly becoming a lot tougher to play against in the next 2-3 years.

I know Sykora isnt lighting it up in the AHL but hes rumored to be an insane forechecker/pest as well.

Othmann profiles more like a Trocheck type. Runs his mouth, makes sneaky plays that aren't worthy of a penalty but are enough to rile the opposition. He's really a rat. His game is physical without the same kind of kaboom you get from Cuylle at this level because of his size and speed.

Sykora is somewhere in the Jesper Fast/Tyler Motte archetype. He's relentless but he's also more of a Lady Byng type player in that he's very respectful in his style of attack. He finishes checks without any question of legality and isn't one to engage heavily in extracurriculars.

If the options are buyout or pay a pick to dump him, I think you just pay the pick. You can recoup assets if you reset. You can't recoup the dead cap if the team is still highly competitive.

The Rangers have one 2nd round pick and one 3rd round pick remaining over the next three years. Despite the rebuild, the prospect pool is incredibly thin — they're lacking depth at center, defense, and goaltending. They've maintained their 1st round picks but those should be used on selections or trades with significant enough impact. The Rangers don't have the capital to add to a Goodrow deal.

  13. Over the Rangers last 10 games goaltending stats are as follows.

    Igor Shesterkin

    4-3-0, .887 SV%, 3.01 GAA, 2.15 GSAA, .829 HDSV%

    Jonathan Quick

    0-2-1, .879 SV%, 3.70 GAA, -2.15 GSAA, .714 HDSV%

Quick is going through a personal slump of his own and hasn't done as well with the shoddy defense in front of him. For as bad as Shesterkin has been, Quick is seemingly worse with the same quality of defense. They desperately need to be healthy and get back to having any semblance of structure.

Per 32 Thoughts Hanafin conversations are heating back up. They're probably losing Lindholm.

None of that really suggests they would move Sharangovich this year.

And I’ve said twice that he’s neither at the top of their list nor are they pressed to move him yet. I think they’d be open to discussions if the right deal came along. Sharangovich is a guy I’d rather pay a little more for than some of the rental opportunities out there.

I'm not sure Calgary sees themselves as sellers. And I don't see them selling him. I think they're trying to extend.

He’s a UFA after next season so they only have so much control. They stand to lose some significant guys in Lindholm, Hanifin, and Tanev. Kylington, who’s working his way back, is also on an expiring deal. If they’re close to a spot they’ll probably just ride them out as self-rentals, but there’s an argument for them taking advantage of what assets they have. Sharangovich might not be amongst their top five guys to sell off, that doesn’t mean he’s not amongst the next group. Given their inability to retain talent headed for UFA I’d imagine they’d at least listen.

Yegor Sharangovich is someone who hasn't been mentioned that I'd look at. Calgary isn't pressed to make a decision about him the way Nashville is with Novak, but they're staring down a potential rebuild and really should be considering most anyone. Sharangovich is 25 and plays all three forward positions. He has one more year at $3.1M. He's been playing first line RW for Calgary over the last few weeks and has been one of their more consistent players during that stretch (12 P in 14 GP). He's also been playing on the first powerplay unit and the second PK unit. He has 5 SHP on the season because he's part of a really dangerous PK unit with Coleman. He's the type of skilled Swiss Army knife the Rangers could use right now. There's also a little bit of a Buch vibe to him.

If not Sharangovich then go for someone like Novak.

5 goals in his last two games including another shorty.

This kid seems to be successful at each level he plays. When do we expect to see him with the Pack?

Maybe two years or so. I'd like for him to play through his junior season because he needs the time to build up muscle and work on his skating. Not sure if he or the team agree there, but he should be back at BC next year at the very least with a chance for a WJC Gold repeat.
