I'm not positive about this, but I think that we might have to send Rempe and Edstrom back down to Hartford by Friday.  If I remember correctly, the AHL roster to qualify for their playoffs has to be submitted by Friday, and they would have to be on it.

    I THINK...

@Drew a Penalty??  Is that right??

If so, that would give us some more space under the cap....even if it's a paper transaction, no?

That's correct re: the AHL roster playoff eligibility. The Rangers would get some temporary cap space from having both Rempe and Edstrom down, but figure you need to keep enough to recall one of them.

  3. I don't get the impression that we'll see a Rempe fight tonight unless something just happens organically. As much as he's tuning out the noise, everyone in the hockey world is practically pleading for him to just not do this every game. He also wants to play hockey. Laviolette wants him to play hockey: "He's not learning in the (penalty) box," Laviolette noted. I think he'll be spending more time on the ice than in the penalty box tonight.

Going to the game against the Bridgeport Islanders tomorrow night.    Looks like Othmann will be one of the only players worth watching.

Have a good time. There should still be some guys to look out for:

Berard plays opposite Othmann and has been a near P/GP since the new year. 15 points in his last 16 games. He has plenty of speed and likes to shoot.

Sykora isn't much of a producer, but he's always engaged and if his line with Blid and Henriksson remains intact, it should be the most consistent line you see.

Scanlin is the only one worth paying attention to on defense. The Rangers just re-signed him and he could be in the running for a spot on the team next year given his waiver status.

  7. 15 minutes ago, Pete said:

Go tweet at Vince for offering Zac Jones.

Probably because they're reported to be shopping Jones and Robertson as Vince later writes in the article:

    Quote

One source wondered if the Rangers might be shopping one of two young defensemen who are blocked in their path to the lineup, Jones and Matthew Robertson.

And not your belief that Anaheim explicitly needs Jones as a PMD because you didn't know about Mintyukov and Zellweger.

  8. Quote

The next domino multiple sources are expecting to fall among the available centers is Anaheim’s Adam Henrique. He’s a quality two-way player, but the fact that the 34-year-old is considered the best remaining option who’s a sure bet to get dealt speaks volumes about the state of the market.

The Rangers think highly of his hockey IQ and have some interest, according to one source, but not at the expense of the first-round pick the Ducks are believed to be asking for. A second-rounder and/or B-level prospect (perhaps defenseman Zac Jones?) might be as far as they'd go for an aging player with 33 points (15 goals and 18 assists) through 49 games played and limited speed. Perhaps a compromise could be a conditional second-round pick that elevates to a first if they reach the Eastern Conference or Stanley Cup Finals, similar to what they did in the Andrew Copp deal a couple seasons ago.

It’s worth wondering how much the Blueshirts would pay if they could fill two holes with one deal, and it’s no secret that they liked what they got out of Frank Vatrano during his 22-game stint (plus another 20 in the playoffs) with the team in 2022. He’s still the most-effective RW to play alongside Kreider and Zibanejad since Pavel Buchnevich was traded in 2021, with that trio posting a 56.07% xGF in 186:34 time on ice together, according to Natural Stat Trick. And he's only gotten better since then, with 22 goals through 50 games played during this all-star season.

Vatrano is under contract for 2024-25 at an average annual value of $3.65 million, which New York could probably afford with the cap ceiling expected to rise to $87.7 million. But fitting both him and Henrique for the remainder of this season would be difficult, even if Drury convinced Anaheim to retain 50% of Henrique’s $5.825 million AAV. That would leave the Rangers on the hook for a combined cap hit of over $6.5 million for both players, which they couldn’t swing unless they were sending a chuck of salary back to the Ducks.

It would work if Kaapo Kakko and his $2.1 million AAV were included in the deal, with the young forward’s name recently surfacing in trade rumors. But those whispers are believed to stem from opposing GMs trying to buy low on the former No. 2 overall pick, as opposed to the Blueshirts actively shopping him.

Then again, of all the feasible offers that might entice Drury to move on from Kakko, a Henrique-Vatrano package is among the most intriguing because it would solve both the 3C and 1RW dilemmas. That’s why some said it can’t be ruled out, while others pointed out that historically a trade of that magnitude is more likely to happen over the summer.

What’s clear is that, if it comes down to one or the other between Henrique and Vatrano, the former has the higher probability of getting moved due to his expiring contract status.

  9. Highlighting some of the names that haven't already been discussed ad nauseam. Vince doesn't have anything new about them.

    Ducks

    Quote

A sleeper trade candidate to keep an eye on is veteran RW Jakob Silfverberg, who’s in the final year of a contract that pays him $5.25 million annually and has some of the best metrics on this floundering Ducks’ team.

    Predators

    Quote

Michael McCarron ($775,000 AAV) and Yakov Trenin ($1.7 million) are a couple other modestly priced forwards on expiring contracts. The former ranks second behind Novak with a 54.77% xGF, albeit in a limited fourth-line center role, while the latter is a physical presence, aggressive forechecker and above-average skater. Neither are going to put up many points (McCarron has 12 this season, while Trenin has 11), but both would bring versatile elements New York wants to infuse into its bottom six.

If you dig even deeper, Nashville has a couple forwards in the AHL who could be had for cheap. Liam Foudy is a former first-round pick who played 72 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season but hasn’t been able to stick with the Preds this year, while Mark Jankowski is a 29-year-old center who brings a big body (6-foot-4, 212 pounds) and has been one of the AHL’s leading scorers with 46 points (15 goals and 31 assists) through 38 games. He also has a 17-goal NHL season on his resume back in 2017-18 with the Calgary Flames.

Novak is the only obvious top-nine choice for the Rangers, but there are some interesting bargain buys to consider if Drury is turned off by the prices for more established players.

    Senators

    Quote

Another Ottawa forward to monitor is winger Dominik Kubalik. His production is way down this year – 12 points (nine goals and three assists) through 43 games played – but he scored 30 goals as a 2019-20 rookie in Chicago and 20 last season with Detroit. With an expiring contract and a manageable $2.5 million AAV, the 28-year-old could be a buy-low candidate.

    Sharks

    Quote

There are also a couple of centers who could be viewed as options for the third line if Grier is willing to let them go with one year remaining on their contracts.

Mikael Granlund, who has been San Jose’s best points-per-game player with 29 (five goals and 24 assists) through 38 games played, has been out since Jan. 16 with a left-shoulder injury but is expected back soon. His $5 million AAV for this season and the next would create a squeeze, which makes him somewhat of a long-shot candidate. But the skilled 30-year-old would certainly qualify as a 3C upgrade.

Nico Sturm is another interesting man in the middle. He hasn’t provided much offensive production, with seven points (three goals and four assists) through 32 games, but the 28-year-old is the type of two-way player the Rangers value. He played that exact third-line center role in Colorado when the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup two years ago, and with a $2 million AAV through the end of the next season, his cap hit is doable.

The centers would cost more than the UFA-bound wingers, but all besides Granlund could probably be had for mid-round picks and/or mid-tier prospects. Perhaps Drury could even talk Grier into a two-for-one type of deal. (Duclair and Sturm, anyone?)

    Kraken

    Quote

But perhaps the most intriguing option would be Yanni Gourde, who won two Cups in Tampa Bay while playing on the same line with current Blueshirt Barclay Goodrow. He’s proven to be a championship-caliber 3C and would fit New York's preference for a hard-working, two-way center to a tee.

The 32-year-old is under contract through the end of the next season for a $5.167 million AAV, which adds a layer of complication. But he’s in the midst of a down year, and if the Kraken don’t see him sticking around, perhaps Drury could talk them into moving on without having to surrender his very best assets.

It will be a few weeks before Seattle declares its intentions, but GM Ron Francis should be on Drury’s speed dial.

Unlikely. He'll probably try for another NHL contract. He'll be UFA once this process is complete and free to sign with anyone.

I doubt it. He was signed to an $800k deal. Why would any team sign him when they otherwise could've claimed him? Is a team really going to sign him for $30k less? He's done. I don't think anyone wants him.

    I wonder if:

2 draft picks: 1 pick is a 2nd that turns into a 1st if the Rangers get out of the 1st Round. And a 3rd that turns into a 2nd next year if the Rangers make it to the Finals.

I wonder if by offering those 2 Conditional Picks, a prospect like Sykora and a player who could step right into their blue line in Jones would be enough to get the job done.

Protects the prospects like Othmann and Perrault. Fail safe plan because if we fall apart in the playoffs like last year, we retain our first but if we so much as win a Round, Anaheim obtains at least a 1st/3rd combo, which could be a 1st/2nd combo if we win the East, at which point I think we would all be okay.

The Rangers have 1st round picks in 2024, 2025 and 2026. They only have a 2nd round pick in 2024. They only have a 3rd round pick in 2026. They don't have the draft capital to get cutesy with conditionals.

At most, they could probably have their 2nd in 2024 upgraded to a 2024 1st or 2025 1st.

Who has a problem? I'm discussing the deal as presented in the thread. I'm saying who I would be comfortable giving up given the parameters. They don't have enough picks to trade, so they're going to have to trade a player/prospect. I'm comfortable moving Jones and Sykora or Berard, plus some lower value picks assuming this trade is going down.

I'm not debating whether or not they should make the trade, I'm operating as if the trade is happening and discussing who I'm willing to part with.

Seems like your stance is you don't want to give up those guys because it doesn't address an issue that sits on the periphery. The biggest issue facing the team right now is a third line center and RW for MZ/CK. That's where the bleeding is, that's what needs to be fixed... Not a perceived speed issue that they aren't going to help fix for another year and a half.

Except the trade wouldn't be Jones plus Sykora/Berard and some lower-value picks. Given the Monahan and Lindholm returns, do you seriously think Henrique plus Vatrano with an extra year is worth a package you've called scraps before in a separate context? There's going to at least be a first-round pick in this deal. That's another issue I take with it. This deal is going to cost more than Henrique and Vatrano are truly worth. I have no problem trading Berard or Sykora. I'm not trading them in addition to a first-round pick and whatever else for two players I don't think move the needle enough.

  13. Just now, Pete said:

Sorry but I'm not letting a couple of bottom six wingers get in the way of fixing two glaring problems for this season.

I'd be more reluctant to part with Sykora, but again saying that you wouldn't trade either of them in a deal to address today's problems is pretty ridiculous.

I don't think Henrique and/or Vatrano adequately enough address the Rangers' problems. That's my issue. And I don't believe you like either of them enough either. So what's the problem here?

They both project to be bottom six forwards and they're tiny. The Rangers don't have picks. They're going to have to give something up to get these players.

If your solution is just not to make a trade because you don't want to give up these guys, then that's not a solution. They clearly have holes to fill today.

This fanbase has a habit of overvaluing and falling in love with dime a dozen players. There's nothing special about these guys that can't be replaced.

I'm not saying to trade both of them, but saying you wouldn't trade either of them is pretty ridiculous.

Sykora is 5'11" and 192 at 19. He's not tiny and doesn't play that way.

I don't make this particular trade. I don't think Henrique is worth the bidding war that's likely being had for his services and throwing Vatrano in only raises the cost of this trade. It's not just trading Berard or Sykora I have issue with, it's that you're also trading them along with whatever draft capital for two players who aren't worth that package. I'd pay more for a player or players who actually have longer-term impact. It's not that I wouldn't make any trade, but definitely not this trade.

This team has an organization-wide speed problem. Sykora and Berard are likely on the team within the next year to year and a half. They're what the team has been missing. If I'm moving either it's in a deal that addresses their speed issue going forward as well. This deal ain't it.
