Flyers Place Tony DeAngelo on Waivers for Purposes of a Buyout; Signed by Carolina to 1-Year/$1.675M Deal

Recommended Posts

I know there was a lot of chatter about a deal between Philadelphia and Carolina for DeAngelo earlier in the off-season and that it seemed like an inevitability. But, it still hasn’t happened and it seems like there were some snags along the way. So I guess this was their best way of ridding themselves of him. I wonder if he falls to Carolina or if another team is willing to take a chance on his talent.

It's almost like getting rid of those two guys was...a great idea

Step forward for that org to rid themselves of Hayes and DeAngelo. Good for them. The process won't be quick but starting that locker room fresh was overdue.

Whatever else anyone might say about Torts, that guy gives zero fucks about clearing the dead wood.

2 of his last 3 teams bought him out. They paid him to go away.

What a clown.

You would think the first buyout would prompt some soul searching. Maybe after the second ? Idk how someone can have his talent and success and not figure out his character flaws to maximize his return on his talent.

Not my problem.

If he goes straight to Carolina,  you have to think there was still some sort of CBA issue with Philly retaining salary in a trade. Or maybe Philly is saving money in doing so, while also getting him to Carolina.

Its more cap gymnastics than it is DeAngelo being a piece of shit. If Carolina wants him, if BrindAmour wants him, it's lends a little to the fact that he can be reigned in.

Yup

Thats what they said, due to trade with retention, then back to old team inside of a year.

Even if cap fuckery, Flyers still showed him the door in short order. This guy just wears out his welcome everywhere except Carolina it seems.

Well, obviously he didn't meet Torts criteria for defensive play. Philly is rebuilding and tearing it down to the studs.

It's odd that Carolina wants him back if he's such a bad person. You'd think BrindAmour wouldn't put up with the stuff that seems to push DeAngelo out the door.

Out if curiosity. Can anyone think of an offensive D man that has changed positions and moved up to forward late in their career?

I'll never understand why such players exist. The position is defenseman.  If you don't like playing defense,  or show an inability to do so, why not move to forward? This way, you can have the puck on your stick longer in the offensive zone,  without it putting stess on others to cover your defensive responsibilities.

Anyway,  maybe he doesn't even make it back to Carolina. After all the moves they've made and the lack of movement on Pesce. Maybe they changed their mind and Philly knew the relationship was too stressed to keep him around.
