Still on pace for 40 pts, but very disappointing after 51 in 64 games last year. He recently was hurt with a lower body injury, is riding a 4 point streak, is on the first pair where he averages 24 minutes a night, and even twice recently played over 30 minutes in a game. This is more of an indication of Torts being Torts rather than anything. Just trying to send a message to the team most likely and using Deangelo. He’s done it plenty of times before. Run with a whole narrative? Flyers are 2-10-3 in their last 15 games. Tony has 6 points (3 pp and 3 ev) and is a -15. They're giving up 4 goals a game. Maybe they shouldn't be playing him 25 minutes a night. There's no narrative. He's a 3rd pair PP specialist, but since their PP is 11.6% over those 15 games, if he's not helping there and he hurts you defensively why play him? The issue probably lies with Torts using him (or having to use him) incorrectly. He's not a minutes eater. He's a specialty offensive-minded 2nd pairing you want getting around 18-20 minutes a night with a heavy weight towards OZ starts. He never broke a 20 minute average with the Rangers or Canes. The last full season with the Rangers when he was most effective with them he had 63%/36% OZ/DZ starts. He was even more effective with Carolina, and they had him at 67/33. Torts has him at 56/43 and chewing up big minutes. I love Torts but either he's misplaying his hand or, and this is probably more likely, Philly just fuckin sucks and has no better options.
