  1. I don't know why everyone is jaded against this guy. He was a third rounder who was never overpaid and produced what you'd expect a 3rd rounder to produce. And he's a dick to play against.

I mean he's not a must keep, but people hate this guy. Not sure why.

I wonder the same thing. He didn't become a top 6 forward and maybe some thought he would, but he's shown some progression every season even if it was just very small progression. It's not hard to see him as a ~20/20 player who plays with an edge going into the middle of his career.

  2. Interesting, as he was considered the least likely of the Islanders' UFAs to resign. Consistent with other resigns, this contract shows that signing any good 26-29 year old is going to be an expensive long term proposition. Get used to it.

Define good. I wouldn't necessarily consider putting up 37 points with Barzal as good, so it depends if last year was an anomaly or the new normal for Eberle.

  3. Then you keep Kreider, hopefully at a reasonable price, and/or you make trades - modeled after the Zibanejad acquisition. Last 2 seasons alone we've seen top-line players get moved below market value, ROR, Skinner, Stone

Can't afford another Spooner, Vesey or Namestnikov wasting and taking roster spots. They need to be filled by difference makers and youth. No more Brickleys or McLeod's either! (Maybe Reaves, that might be fun and affordable)

As much as I'd like to see Kreider back on a reasonable term, the years and price will probably be too high and they will trade him regardless of Panarin signing or not. I still have a feeling he'll be moved prior to or at the draft...so very soon.

Assuming they whiff on Panarin, probably fill with 1-2 leadership-type vets on 2 or 3 year deals to help the kids. Pavelski has been mentioned, and it's not a bad idea. Seeing what a guy like Justin Williams has done for Carolina, it does have some merit. They might be able to find some steals outside of that top couple tiers of free agents. Wayne Simmonds at a fair price on a short term for example. Seems like Quinn's type of player too, providing leadership and grit, and could potentially regain that 20 goal/50 point production after a down year last year.

  4. Classic game pattern: home team comes out with push and the first half dozen scoring chances only to be thwarted and have the visitors score on their first chance, 15 minutes into the game. Second goal was a back breaker, as it allowed StL to go into a trap against which Boston really never got anything going. As Blues prepare to skate the cup, I'm wondering if the unthinkable had happened and the Rangers had lost game 7 of the '94 finals, would I have endured watching the the Canucks skate the Cup or would I have left the Garden in agony?

The Bruins won the Cup fairly recently in 2011. The loss can't hurt nearly as bad as 94 would have with a 54 year drought on the line.

  5. Is there any data showing that players are more likely to return more/better assets via trade at the beginning of a season vs the trade deadline?

Skinner, Karlsson, Pax, ROR, Duchene vs Hayes, Nash, Grabner, Dzingel, Duchene

I meant more from a standpoint of Kreider getting injured or playing his value down with a bad couple months or something. If all else stays the same between now and the deadline? Yeah, I really don't know which would bring back more.

  6. even if their ultimate decision is to trade Kreider, I still think they hold on to him until the trade deadline. it is still unknown what the team will look like come October and if our top prospects are good enough to make the team. Kravtsov, Hughes could all be sent to Hartford to start the season

I would assume they would just replace Kreider with other talent using the saved cap space (via FA) or directly in the trade itself, rather than trade Kreider for picks and unknowns and not leveraging the available cap space. Keeping him to trade at the deadline would be a pretty large mistake. Honestly, that strategy almost cost them with Zuccarello when he was horrible to start the year then got hurt. Lucky for the Rangers he came back and was very strong for a month or two before the deadline. Given Kreider's propensity to be very streaky, I don't really trust his value being higher than it is right now.

  7. Zucc, who is a much better overall player, didn't get us a 1st rounder. Not sure what Kreider could get you. it'll all depend on the situations with other teams at the next trade deadline. Some team could lose a winger and is willing to give away a 1st rounder for Kreider. Or maybe no team would be looking for a winger of Kreider's caliber and no one would give anything up for him

Trading Kreider now gets a team a full year with him and, given his age, is probably a much more intriguing player to commit to and re-sign long term than Zuccarello.

Zuccarello being a better overall player is very debatable. That's not going to be a league-wide opinion. There would be many GMs who would disagree with that, and those are the ones who will pay the price.

  8. He hasn’t shown he can be a consistent first line player. If he wants to accept 2nd line, complimentary player salary, sure. Welcome back. But that’s not what it’s looking like.

I would have no problem re-signing Kreider for 4 years, maybe 5 max @ 6m per. I think it takes 6 or 7 years to get him to sign an extension though, quite possibly more $ per year. I'd pass on a contract length that long for him.

  9. Team that beat pretty much the best teams in the west and is one win away from a cup against the 2nd best regular season team in east isn't talented?

What have we become here lol?

"isn't talented" != "not all that talented". I took it to mean they are not as talented as many of the other teams that were in the playoffs. It's a shining example that you can win with less talent. Credit to the Blues playing some great hockey.

  10. They started out horribly. The worst team in the league at Christmas. That's the only reason they didn't win the division -- in fact they lost the division on the last day of the season. "4th worst" is not the proper way of thinking about it. They were the best team in the NHL in the second half.

I agree they're not loaded with offensive game breakers but they have at least two. To say they're not that talented is wrong. They're a heavy team. Good defensive team. Good goaltending. They're solid all around.

Playing a good defensive game with good goaltending hides a lot of shortcomings in talent. As a Rangers fan, you've seen this for the better part of the past decade.

Tarasenko is the best forward the Blues have. Ironically, he's around Panarin's tier. Probably half a rung lower.

  11. I don’t think it works that way. JD has said over and over patience is paramount. Would they like to make the playoffs next season? Of course. But I don’t think that means anything. They’re going to make the decisions that best help build the team for long term success. “Trying to make a run” implies they’ll be selling first round picks and young players to the highest bidder and I just don’t see that being the case in two years.

I think the team will be talented enough next season to be better than they were this season. How much better depends more on what happens at defense and how effective Kravstov and Kakko are in their rookie seasons. That said they missed the playoffs by 20 points. There’s a ton of ground to make up.

    Re: Blues. You’re wrong haha.

No he's not. 3 players over 50 points. None over 80. They have a good defense and have gotten some timely goaltending. There's a reason they only accumulated 99 points during the season, were the 4th worst playoff team, and a very small minority picked them to even get out of the 1st round against the Jets.

  12. Trade Shattenkirk, buyout Smith.

    Skjei/DeAngelo

    Hajek/Fox

    Staal/Pionk

    Claesson

The rest go to HFD for a the time being.

I mean just keep Shattenkirk over Pionk. What's Pionk going to get? 2.5 mill? A Shattenkirk trade would still probably see us paying half (3.3M?). Basically stuck with Shattenkirk's cap hit for Pionk. At least I have some kind of [slim] hope Shattenkirk's career can be rekindled.
