  1. And what if that player doesn?t put a point per game?

Depends how much of a decrease that is being talked about. It would hurt just like any FA that doesn't perform up to expectations. A PPG player at 12 mill/yr that dips down to a 60 point player is not really any worse than a 50 point 8 mill/yr player that dips down to 35 points. You're probably still better off with the former.

  2. Hartman is also better than Namestnikov and whatever the hell Lias Andersson is right now. He's a legitimate third-line energy player.

I'm also not at all convinced you're getting full 82-game NHL seasons out of Kakko, Kravtsov, Howden (who hit the wall hard last year), Andersson, and Chytil. Having, you know, actual NHL players under contract would help in the event any need to spend time in the AHL. The days of suffering Connor Brickley's and Matt Beleskey's should be over.

    Based on what?

  3. Uncle Larry today says that if it is a choice between at Panarin at 11.5 per for seven years and Kreider at 6.5 for 6, he'd take the latter. I agree. He also points out that there will be other big name UFAs next year and it might be better to wait to see our needs. Agreed again. Last year it was Tavares, this year Panarin, next year someone else.

Pretty sure Hall is the one big name UFA next summer, if he's even available. Tavares and Panarin caliber FAs have generally been pretty rare, but who knows...maybe it is becoming a new norm for guys to turn down extensions for free agency.

  4. The drive from Newark to the city must have been a little intimidating for someone who heard NY is a big city. All you guys have probably been in a car with a first timer driving in. 100% of them are in awe. Welcome to your new home kid.

He probably felt bad for Hughes after seeing Newark compared to NYC.

  5. Also Binnington was .914 goalie giving up 2 and a half goals a game. Hard to say they only won because he stood on his head.

No question he had a handful of clunkers, which is why I didn't say he was the sole reason or that he carried them every game. But so many of their wins consisted of him playing at a ridiculous level, especially the times they needed a win most. The clunkers make the average look less spectacular.

But whatever. If people want to act like every single player on every Cup winning roster is irreplaceable they can. I'll just agree to disagree.

  6. I've seen this narrative show up a few times now. A couple of points here:

    - St Louis didn't "get hot". Once they got their shit together they were the best team in the league, and that was over a span covering a third of the season. This wasn't a team that stumbled across the line and just made the playoffs. They were motoring by the time the playoffs came around and had been for a long time.

    - What St Louis did was based on a big, heavy, veteran driven team playing extremely physical and perfectly executed shut down hockey.

I just don't get how Rangers fans can look at what the Blues did and think "if they can do it so can we". The Rangers have no Pietrangelo, Parayko, Gunnarsson or Bouwmeester. They have no O'Reilly, Tarasenko, Schenn, Schwartz, Steen or Barbashev. It's highly unlikely the Rangers will be entering the playoffs riding a wave of being the best team in the league for a prolonged period of time. They really don't have any of the ingredients that took the Blues to the Stanley Cup. What the Blues did isn't really indicative of anything the Rangers may or may not achieve next season as the two rosters are about as different as is possible when comparing two NHL teams.

I suppose if the idea is "get into the playoffs and anything can happen" then yeah, sure. I suppose that's true. Personally, I'm not expecting this team to seriously contend for at least another year.

The Rangers don't have anyone on the level of Steen, Barbashev, Schenn, etc? You were making a good case up until then.

  7. It is for many, but then again the cost of living in NYC is significantly higher than other American cities. That's why the pay is so much higher here for everyone except salary capped professional athletes. Dolan is laughing all the way to the bank, insane revenues and he's not allowed to put it back in the team.

But that's New York, what about a player in San Jose with even worse California income taxes and not much to do to have fun. It's just not a level playing field, all teams in taxed states should have the option to give players a cap-exempt bonus roughly equal to their extra tax burden versus zero income tax states

I hear you, but they aren't people with normal jobs where cost of living can be the difference between affording to live there or not (i.e., rent or mortgage too high). They can buy homes with cash, and they can get it back if/when they sell it.

  8. The tax free stuff is blown a bit out of proportion since it's only tax free on half the contract because only half the games are actually played at home in state. New York versus a no-income state will be a difference of about 4.5% of the total contract value. It's nothing to sneeze at and could be a differentiator if all else equal, but two things:

    1) Often times a big market can make up this rather small difference in endorsements.

    2) Athletes are humans and sometimes paying a small penalty to live somewhere more desirable to them is absolutely worth it. Quality of life has a price. I'd like to think that in general, living in NYC and playing in MSG is favorable to many athletes.

  9. I think this is an experimentation year, anyway.

    Kakko

    Kravtsov

    Hajek

    Possibly

    Rykov

    Lindgren

    Lindqvist

Getting NHL action. Full year of Lemieux who was absolutely gassed at the end of the season. Trouba and Skjei together (presumably).

Chemistry experiment and see where people slot in.

If they get Panarin, great. If not, don't give Kreider stupid money or term, and this is a successful off season.

Yup. I don't think the expectation is to be a playoff team next year no matter what they do right now. It's all about 2020+.

  10. After drafting Knight, not sure signing Bob is their priority.

I mean they need a goalie, but Bob is going to get a max deal. He's not going to sign there for three or four years.

The timeline still fits. Knight is likely 3-4 years away. If Bobrovsky signs for 7, the load on the last 3ish years of that contract is eased as Knight gets more time. It might eventually be a bad contract to have on their books, but I'm not sure they care about that right now as much as they care about being competitive after hiring Quenneville.

  11. Great post and great comment by rmc51. I am curious as to why you think Panarin will sign with Florida. And with past rumours and the fact that we have 6 young Russians for the bread man to play with, what's not to like for Panarin besides the state tax?

Quennville. Bob and Panarin I think both are visiting Florida. I'm just speculating, but there's also a couple of good Russian players on the team and they can afford to sign both.
