Rangers Enter Affiliation with ECHL’S Cincinnati Cyclones

I thought they used the Charlotte Checkers as development pre AHL.

ECHL affiliates change all the fucking time. The Rangers have used the Charlotte Checkers, the Maine Mariners, the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, the Jacksonville Icemen....the list is eternal.

 

And @Ozzy - the names are incredible. I'm absolutely going to end up at a game where the Solar Bears face the Ghost Pirates and I'm all for it.

Are some of these televised, or are they just on local TV?  I'd love to catch some of these, even if it's late night.

No broadcast TV to my knowledge, but I'm absolutely certain they have some kind of streaming deal.

There was probably a bunch of drunken dudes naming these teams around a campfire one night.  I could probably come up with a couple of really good ones after a few tips of the bottle!!

Swamp Rabbits is a great name though. It sounds like a creature on a Magic: The Gathering card or something.

The Solar Bears are a Lightning affiliate out of Orlando, they sponsor a team in the Southern Girls Hockey League for girls ages 8-18 called the Lady Bears.  My daughter is a goalie on the 16 year old team.  They're a great organization (apart from the Lightning affiliate), and do a lot to help grow the sport.  We're 2 hours from Orlando so she practices in Jacksonville with the team there sponsored by the Jax Icemen which are a Rangers affiliate, but they don't have a team in her age group otherwise I'd be able to say my daughter is a goalie in the Rangers organization.....

Dude, that's freakin' awesome!!!  Maybe one day soon she gets the call to play with the big team!!!  ...here's hoping!!!

Charlotte moved up in the world.. They went from the Rangers to being the AHL affiliate for the Hurricanes.. Due to the Canes owner being loon to work with, the they switched over to being the Panthers AHL affiliate a couple seasons ago, Carolina now has Chicago as their top farm team.

There won't be a single guy on the team with an NHL future. Doesn't really change much of anything. The ECHL is just where you stow your worst ELCs and guys on minor-league deals who are forced out of the AHL lineup.

When I still live in California, we had the Stockon Thunder; who've since moved, which brought the Stockton Heat; Calgary's farm team. 

Wasn't a huge fan of the ECHL; entertaining, just not the best hockey on the planet. I think I'd rather watch a NCAA game than an ECHL... 

Having escaped California to Ohios warm embrace, I thought it was a little ironic the cyclones became an NYR affiliate. Maybe it's sign!

Well, I jinxed it. The Rangers bailed on Jacksonville and now the Icemen are a Sabres affiliate. Just announced it today......

@Ozzy Flo Sports streams the ECHL and some other hockey stuff. I believe you're into racing they offer a racing package an do an incredible amount of local/national dirt modified, sprint car, asphalt stuff (including the nascar whelen modified tour). Only thing that gets me through the off season 7 nights a week. 

 

My family lived in the ECHL world from 2000-2012ish it was great stuff. Most of those  kids leave it all on the ice for next to nothing money wise every time every shift. As Drew said there's a small number of ELC guys who get paid a little better. Use to be a league where some NHL teams would send their youngs goalies they thought may have a shot to get a ton of games rather than riding pine in the A. They would also send tough guys they were looking to drop their gloves and gain that experience. Great times. 

 

Problem with the league is it's so volatile when it comes to teams just disappearing sometimes during the season. Affiliations as pointed out already here with NHL/AHL teams change like the weather.
