Rangers Trying to Trade Gauthier and Georgiev's Rights

Julien Gauthier

Currently an RFA with arbitration rights, Gauthier got as good a look as he could possibly have wanted due to injury and the Rangers’ thin pre-deadline forward group. In 49 games, Gauthier had seven points; once the cavalry came at the deadline, he got into one more game. Two league sources said Drury is trying to get anything he can in a trade for Gauthier, who’s still only 24. Seems unlikely that will work — or that Gauthier is a Ranger next season.

Alexandar Georgiev

Even more than Gauthier, Drury is trying hard to find a trade partner for the disgruntled Georgiev before the Rangers are forced to let him walk when qualifying offers are due July 11. The Rangers were holding out for a first-round pick for Georgiev early last season; that’s likely down to a mid-round pick at best now.

This makes total sense, but as we've discussed elsewhere, I don't think they can actually move Georgiev, or more precisely, that any team will want to move an asset to acquire him given his qualifying offer of $2.5M~ is due July 11. My guess is most teams will simply take their shot at offering him a one- or two-year "prove it" deal in free agency. Arizona and Buffalo come to mind here.

Gauthier, it makes total sense. He has no future here. He may not have a future in the NHL at all. 'Quebecois Higgins' was such a spot-on assessment by @LindG1000 but even Higgins managed to produce some in the NHL. Gauthier just doesn't. It's been in short spurts, but the sample size is probably large enough at this point to write him off completely. He's a career 0.2 P/GP who is, at best, a replacement level player.

There are many teams who would give Gauthier a chance, but they won't give up anything of value for him.  The Rangers over asked for Georgiev last summer.  The required qualifier is actually $2.65 (last year's salary rather than cap hit).  I doubt anyone is going to give up something for the honor of paying that.

Agreed. Occam's trusty razor suggests any team with interest will have little to no interest in him at that price because it's around $1 million more than he will likely get on a one- or two-year "prove it" contract in free agency.

He has 5 goals in 96 career NHL games. If he doesn't do it, you should get 'Gauthier 15' tattooed across your back. Put some skin in the game.

Meh. He needs more minutes and a role that fits his strong suits. A shot with better talent could kick start his output. Guy generates offense. Play him with someone who isn't learning the league and can keep up with him and he will produce.
