Rangers Draft [LW] Ryan Gropp 2nd Rd (41st) Pick

Drew a Penalty

He's a passenger on his line. His production doubles with Barzal. That's insane. He's an asset to his team, but it's clear that Barzal has a considerable effect on his ability to produce.

You don't get 31 points in 14 games being a passenger, especially when he's played with Barzal and not had the same production in the past. It's not as if Barzal showed up and the production jumped.

Barzal missed the first 10 games. Played 13. Left for another 10 because of the WJC. Has played the last 18.

Every time Barzal comes back, Gropp's production trends upward.

In the first 10 games Gropp went 9-10. In the subsequent 13 with Barzal he went 12-13. Barzal leaves for the WJC and he goes 5-10. Barzal comes back and he goes 35-18.

Three games remaining in the regular season. Seattle is going to the playoffs. Will be interesting to see how they do. Better that they go on a long run as there's no reason for Gropp to go to Hartford because they're very much out of the AHL playoffs. I don't know if it would serve him to go to Greenville, but they're doing very well in the ECHL.

80 points in 63 games for Gropp.

I think playing anywhere against grown men would be good for him.

Looks like the passenger line of thought wins the day. I would add that he was man-sized in that league and has now lost both that advantage as well as Barzal.

Essentially, barring some dramatic change, his NHL aspirations are over almost before they began.

Prospect Update: Gropp With Three Goals in Two Games

by Matt Calamia @MattCalamia / NYRangers.com

December 3rd, 2017

Ryan Gropp, Adam Chapie and Vince Pedrie all scored goals in Hartford's 5-4 shootout win over Rochester Friday night in the American Hockey League. Brandon Crawley had two assists while Pedrie, Vinni Lettieri and Neal Pionk had one helper each. Goaltender Alexandar Georgiev finished with 34 saves for the win.

The Wolf Pack dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Toronto Marlies Saturday night. Gropp posted his first career multi-goal/point game to give him five thus far in his rookie campaign. Letteri netted his ninth of the year, while the newly acquired Peter Holland had an assist. Georgiev had 35 saves in the loss.

Isn't every scorer, especially a winger, a passenger in some sense? It's too early to say this for Gropp, even if he's been trending that way.

It's now 4 goals in the past 4 games and he's starting to generate a lot more shots. This is not being a passenger:

We have some decent playmakers in Zucc, Buch, Miller and Hayes... so being a passenger may not be the end of the world. As long as he can put the puck in the net of course

Yea - This team is in bad need of a guy or two who doesn't need the puck on their stick. Call it a sniper, call it a passenger...whatever. They need more shoot-first players.
