Phil
Money. Quote According to Fightful’s report, Cody was looking to sign a new big money deal with AEW in a meeting that took place last Friday (February 11). However, Cody and Brandi could not come to terms with AEW on a new contract for them. https://411mania.com/wrestling/backstage-details-on-what-led-to-cody-rhodes-leaving-aew/ The article also indicates he'd effectively had a fallen out with leadership and I guess with the dressing room, too? Phil
Quote Sports Illustrated's Justin Barrasso reported the news Wednesday, saying that "sources close to the situation have confirmed that his next destination will be back where his career started in WWE." There was no timeframe given, but the report speculated Rhodes could begin filming vignettes at the Performance Center as soon as this weekend. Barrasso's sources also said that Cody's wife, Brandi, is not expected to join him in WWE. If that is the case, it's unknown where her in-ring career would continue if she wants to pursue it. Quote The report pointed to a specific area of friction regarding Rhodes losing booking power over time: "While Rhodes was never intended to overstay his welcome in the world title picture, one key factor that led to this exit was losing all responsibilities involving booking. That is a role where (Tony) Khan, who is the head of creative, has taken full rein. Originally, Rhodes was part of that process. As great as Dusty Rhodes was as a performer, his contributions as a booker are an integral part of his legacy. For Rhodes, AEW represented another chance to pay homage to his father as a booker while also further cementing his own legacy. Losing that opportunity in AEW hurt Rhodes more than any loss he suffered in the ring," he wrote. https://www.f4wonline.com/news/wwe/cody-rhodes-reportedly-returning-to-wwe-loss-of-booking-power-led-to-aew-departure?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
Sharpshooter
That's very interesting. I like Brandi, so it sucks she won't be joining him, but having Cody back in WWE will only help get some attention back to that company. Right? Intrigued to see how his comeback plays out. Phil
Oh, this is a huge deal for them. Absolutely. The reports I've read have all suggested he's going to be treated like a massive star. But I tend to agree with Wade Keller's take on this that largely suggests that whatever Cody ultimately signs for, he's worth ... to WWE. Not to AEW. Not anymore. He's simply been eclipsed. They have so much star power even without him. Their main event level is incredibly packed. It's hard to justify paying Rhodes what Punk and Danielson are making when they're leading the charge here, not him.
Sharpshooter
Indeed. I like Cody and all, but those others take priority right now for AEW, there's no doubt about it. I did just see the rumors that Vince is already planning on giving him a huge push and everything. That can only mean the return of....Stardust! Phil
I mean, they do, but he really reinvented himself and proved them wrong. How much that will translate going back, I don't know.
Sharpshooter
Yeah, who knows. It did wonders for MacIntyre. Morrison came back too, buy they really didn't do anything with him. We'll see. They'll certainly push him to the moon to start.
Phil
I mean, Morrison isn't very good, so I can understand why they ended up cutting him. His wife is great. He's miles from it. McIntyre/Galloway 100% reinvented himself, though. Same as Cody.
Sharpshooter
lol Right. I thought he did really well for himself outside of WWE, so I was hopeful when he came back, but nothing came of it. I've always been a big MacIntyre guy, so I'm happy with the results there.

Phil
Brilliant line. Smart addition, too. That tape library with Danielson, Punk, Cole, the Bucks, Page, reDRagon, and Lethal under contract is a money-printing machine to sell career docs/stories. Bet they hire Regal (and maybe even Joe) to run it, too.
