Dave
Apparently a solar flare heading towards earth may make the Northern Lights viewable as far as south as Pennsylvania. Cloud cover will effect some areas but the visibility in NJ is supposed to be good. NY seems iffy because of clouds: http://www.accuweather.com/en/features/trend/dazzling_northern_lights_antic_1/10107004 The event is still only a possibility, since there is about a 7 hour window at the moment of when it could be visible. They are estimating 8pm, which would give good lighting conditions. Much later and it won't be visible. Here's a site that has the current visible range, noted by the red line. http://helios.swpc.noaa.gov/ovation/
LindG1000
It's been a life goal of mine to view the Aurora Borealis and the Aurora Australis. If I could knock that off my bucket list tonight...wow.

Tonybologna
Skies definitely had a tint of green around 8pm here in Nassau County. Does that count? lol I suppose, it would be cool to know what exactly we were supposed to see. I'm guessing we shouldn't have been expecting this: http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Travel/Pix/gallery/2010/11/11/1289495137452/Northern-lights-in-Canada-006.jpg

Being that it was supposed to "extend as far south as NY", I would assume what I saw was it lol. Just a green tint. It looked cool, but nothing like that picture. I saw it driving home on the Southern State.

Dave
I was following the AccuWeather facebook page as they were giving updates throughout the night. The radiation levels never got as high as they hoped and so while the Northern Lights were viewable further south than normal, they didn't make it to our area. Still for me, it's one of those moments where I'd rather be aware of it and have it not occur than to miss a once or twice in a life time event.
