Tons of enforcers didn't seem to mind it, but it caused them anxiety and was a source of fear.

I'm not sure where you're making the leap to he's not ready or wasn't ready. My point is, he transitioned to defense late in his development and therefore he may be in a wider curve than other defensemen. His ability to play at this level is testament to his athleticism and ability. Defense is (imo) the most cerebral of all 4 positions and demands informed decisionmaking , which comes from exposure, which is why defenseman take longer to develop on general.
