Guy went from winning the hobey baker and probably always being the best guy on any team he played on to being a utility guy.

Sometimes being good just means you get an invite to the show.. you gotta find your place.

^This. IMO just about every NHL’er was at one time, ‘the best guy on his team.’ Certainly the best guy at his local rink and for sure, THE best guy on the pond or lake.

I recall a guy nicknamed Lefty who used to play in Rockland County NY. He smoked everyone on the ice all at once and could practically score at will. (Ok, not exactly but it felt like that.) Where did he go?

My high school QB was the Joe Namath of our time…locally. I was a receiver on that team and he could drill it through your chest without sweating and with the flick of his wrist. Where did he go? I know. Florida. There was so much hype about him being on TV some day. Nope. Came home with his tail between his legs. Didn’t get a sniff of game and always the second backup.

There’s always someone better. Always.

My nephew was HS hockey teammates with a guy who was the "best around" and has now bounced around low juniors  a couple of D1 teams. And my son played with and against players in D2 football that got NFL tryouts and bounced around the various other leagues. It's a really cutthroat thing to get into pro sports. And hard for a kid to put down the dream and start to adult.

KR for the Saints, Deonte Harty,  played against my son's D2  team. Looked like he had a different gear than anyone else on the field. Scouting report is that he had returned some record number of kicks for TDs. Special teams coach for my son's team is like "We're gonna stop him". Harty returns opening kickoff for TD. Specials team coach then says "Fuck it; We're kickng the ball out of bounds every kickoff".
