phillyb
And the ex-Rangers in Tampa saga continues. This is the third RHD they've scooped up from us, the second after a buyout - Stralman in FA, Girardi, and Shattenkirk. God, I hate that fucking team. LindG1000
Fine signing for the Bolts. We really couldn't work out 1.75M extra with a team that we've dealt with extensively in the past, though? We couldn't work out taking Condon or something? Eesh.

We couldn't work out taking Condon or something? Eesh. Maybe, but what's the point? Wouldn't have freed up much space if they were forced to retain at least half of Shattenkirk plus take dead weight in return. This contract proves there really was zero way the Rangers were going to be able to dump him and save much of anything against the cap. It'd probably have been a net loss against the 2019-20 cap, but it'd have saved us quite a bit in the longer run.

LindG1000
was thinking same thing. Thinking it over...it's term. TB is hog-tied for the 2020 cap once Point signs, and they've got the Sergachev, Cernak, Cirelli, and Joseph deals to figure out with...give/take 6m in space. They can't take term without giving Salary. The only way this was happening was if we took Killorn back or made it a larger deal and grabbed Tyler Johnson. In short, it was a no-go from the get-go. Sod16
Ok, he says he pissed, but don't get down on him for some momentary venting. He signed at a discount with us and was a good apple start to finish. It just didn't work out, largely for reasons beyond his control. Of course, he doesn't have good cause to be "pissed." I'm sure, on reflection, he wouldn't claim that the Rangers should not, in deference to him, have refrained from signing Panarin and Trouba, which is what made this necessary. The Rangers have not, historically, been quick to the trigger with buy outs (witness the continued presence of Staal and Smith). They do it when they have little choice. Shattenkirk's new market value, less than 30% of what he was making and for one year rather than two, speaks volumes to the necessity of this move and should quiet Kevin down. I hope he does well with the Lightening. He did his best here. Trying to play hurt probably made the knee worse. https://nypost.com/2019/08/05/kevin-shattenkirk-signs-with-lightning-after-rangers-buyout/
Future
Thinking it over...it's term. This has always been the issue with Shatty. $3.25 or whatever for one year is easy. For two is really, really difficult.

I think this worked out better for him in the short term, and a financial long term. Guy should be set for life. Gravesy
I asked him to elaborate why he was so “pissed off” when he finally found out the team was buying out the rest of his deal. “For a few reasons,” Shattenkirk said. “I understand the salary cap and kind of the position that puts teams and management in. It’s something that everyone has to deal with across the league and I get it. “I think I’m pissed off at myself for not taking advantage of the opportunity to play at home better and give them a reason to make it a no-brainer, that this wouldn’t be their decision. “But I also think that I went through a lot over the last two years and endured a lot. That obviously wasn’t where we thought we’d be when I signed on July 1. There were a lot of moves made that took our team to that rebuild stage that I wasn’t initially thinking we were part of. I felt like I bought into it pretty well. But obviously ending up where I am now and going through the buyout – once you buy into that process then you find yourself the one who’s out, it’s a pretty frustrating thing, to feel like you’ve kind of poured your heart into it and, you know, kind of all for nothing in a way.” “It’s definitely not a success story,” Shattenkirk said. “I think when you look at just everything that happened there, we were poised to be a really good team. And we had a playoff team for sure. Obviously with the (rebuilding) letter going out and the coach change from AV, it was clear that they were going to kind of work to build thing from the ground up. Again, I wish I had done more on my part to play better and to perform better and to make it work. “But obviously it’s just something that, this is what happened and they had to make their move, and obviously signing some big contracts this summer, I offered them the biggest cap relief. That’s the business side of things. Sometimes you’ve just got to swallow that pill and move on. I’m really looking at this as an opportunity to get back to what I know I can do and play on a team that is surely poised to help me do that.” https://theathletic.com/1118553/2019/08/05/its-definitely-not-a-success-story-pissed-off-kevin-shattenkirk-reflects-on-rangers-tenure-with-disappointment/ Fair enough tbh. Myusername
I feel kinda bad for him, but it's a two-way street and he just didn't deliver the goods. Then again, it was kind of on us for expecting the world when he was hardly ever a world-beater in any regard. It's annoying as fuck seeing him go to the lightning, but with his recent injuries and struggles he'll probably only be seldom used on the PP when their other D-men are shitting the bed Good luck to him, but at the same time it'll be fun watching Kakko and Kravstov dangle around him several times a year
4EverRangerFrank
Good luck to him, but at the same time it'll be fun watching Kakko and Kravstov dangle around him several times a year 100% agree. TBL has become the NYR retirement home...and the fact that it's in Florida makes it even more laughable. LOL
CCCP
stop crying, Kevin. Rangers gave you a bunch of millions in the bank and a Rangers jersey with your name that you can frame
Sod16
I'm assuming that TB is thinking of him as a one year deal PP specialist, because they will be in a tight enough position cap wise next year that it will be tough signing him again if he has a solid year and hence due more than he's getting now.
