Rangers Do Not Sign, Lose Rights to Prospects Bernhardt and Lakatos

One was a 4th round pick. You'd hope you could at least get this guy some AHL time.

Bernhardt, 23, was selected by the Rangers in the fourth round of the 2015 NHL draft. He had a mediocre 2015-2016 season, which was split with Djugardens in the SHL and the London Knights of the OHL. Hip injuries then severely limited his ability to get on the ice. He played just three games during the 2017-2018 season and missed all of this past season.

Would be a long shot to sign this guy, to put it mildly.

Now, yes, in hindsight. But when you are making a pick in the 4th round, you hope to get something out of them.

Bernhardt essentialy did this to himself when he came over to the OHL and, if I remember, ended being a healthy scratch in the playoffs. He was awful.

Lakatos was an over-ager, and a real head scratcher at that.

Sure, you hope. But considering the success rate of 4th round picks it seems a bit unnecessary to dwell on those who don’t pan out.

4th rounders aren't generally turning pro, even at the AHL level.

You can hope a 4th rounder becomes something but usually they dont.

They’ve had 1 4th rounder make the nhl since the 05 lockout. That’s bad.

There are a few in Hartford, now. None seem to be breaking the glass ceiling though.

The team has had more success with random FAs than later picks. But, this may be changing under Gorton. At least the expectations for these 2 was incredibly low.

Not to be a nitpick, but they've had four.

Ryan Callahan (assuming you count the results of the '04 draft as "since the lockout"), Dale Weise, Tom Pyatt and Ryan Graves all played in the NHL. Next year, Shesterkin and possibly Reunanen will join that group.
