2019 Off-Season Thread: We Got This Bread, Man
BrooksBurner replied to Phil's topic in New York Rangers
Kreider for Trouba seems plenty, and a pretty even 1 for 1. I kind of like that deal if they do in fact lock up Panarin. -

Also, how does Winnipeg have cap problems? They are perfectly fine. They have 24 million to work with, plus however much the cap goes up. That's a lot more than the Rangers have. Even if the Jets give Laine a huge deal now they have plenty of room. -

Skjei/++ maybe. Not sure where that leaves the Rangers on the left side, and with a glut of RHD. -

I'll be more inclined to lose a couple of good assets in a trade for Trouba if it means Smith or Shattenkirk on the way out as part of the deal. Miller is a non-starter IMO. -

Really depends on the cost. I'm not sold on giving up a ton of assets followed by 7-8m a year for him on a long term contract. -

He'd have to really love New York to pass on 20 something million dollars. -

No. Haven't you heard? The answer is to use the cap space on guys like Dzingel and Brandon Tanev to clog up roster space with more of the same rather than an elite player to play on the top line. Something something because signing an elite player like Panarin is "more of the same". You know, like that time we signed elite players like Gomez, Drury, and Redden....err they were elite right? -
That would be such a ballsy move. If Hughes met the hype and the Devils passed on him they would never hear the end of it unless Kakko was every bit as good in his own right.

Game of Thrones (TV Show Discussion Only) *DO NOT POST SPOILERS*

This is what I mean when I say rushed. Unless you kill one entire side of the current power struggle, and assuming the people come out on top of the white walkers in the Great War, then it will go right back to a power struggle that needs to be resolved. -

I have trouble believing it won't be rushed at this point. Hard to see how they come to a logical conclusion with like 6 hours left. -
The Devils can't pass on Hughes. It would be an absolute nightmare for them if they were wrong. It would be far less of a nightmare if they stuck with Hughes and he busted but Kakko was good. Nobody would blame them.

[tsn] McKenzie: "Rangers want to get better in a hurry,"

We've seen Torts' guys blow big series leads before too, against less talented teams than TB. -

If there ever was a series where a team comes back from a 3-0 deficit, it's one that involves a 62 win team. -

I don't know why you push this as support for not signing Panarin. It is actually quite the opposite because players of his quality hitting the market is incredibly rare. Being the lucky team to sign a player of his caliber is even rarer. Other than Tavares last year, who obviously just wanted to go back home, how many players of that caliber have hit the market in the last decade? What we know based on the past is precisely how we attempt to predict the future/unknown. -

Well you can look at future free agents on Capfriendly. There are only a handful over the next 4 or 5 years (Hall? Gaudreau? Forsberg? Mackinnon?), and the chances of any of them hitting the market are slim to none. All would be almost 30 as well by the time they are even up. I think Panarin at 31-32 will still be better than what you will find available on the open UFA market, even considering potential regression. Karlsson I am less sure about. -

Either side can be right. Both paths are entirely legitimate, and I wouldn't blame the Rangers for choosing one path over the other. -

Then what? He becomes a terrible hockey player? I don't see it happening. I agree about the injury concerns, but that's the only reason I'm skeptical. -

I can only speak for myself, but I did not want Parise. He looked nothing the same to me the year after he missed a year with the knee injury. The explosiveness and speed was gone. I don't think it is fair to say nobody worries about 4-5 years from now. I think we just disagree on what value guys like Panarin and Karlsson will have to the team at that time. I think they will still be very good players, and I don't think they will be so bad we will be wanting to buy them out like Redden and Richards. -

I get the trepidation, but the guys they have been burned by are of the Redden/Gomez/Drury/Richards variety. Those guys are not on the same plane as Panarin/Karlsson. It is far more equivalent to looking at the acquisition of Jagr or to a lesser degree Gaborik, in terms of talent level, and both were successes on broadway. -

I agree. The percentages of him coming here are very low.
