Long live the King
A new skills competition at the 2020 NHL All-Star Game will feature players shooting pucks from the stands, over the fans and at targets on the ice, sources tell ESPN. Debuting at the skills competition event in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 24, eight players from the All-Star Game rosters will stand in a section of Enterprise Center above the lower bowl of seats. From there, they will fire pucks down to circular targets positioned on the ice below. The targets will all have different point values, based on the difficulty of the shot attempt. Pucks that hit the middle of the targets will also carry higher point values than the ones that hit the sides. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/28481184/skills-competition-nhl-all-star-game-feature-players-shooting-pucks-stands

Long live the King
that will be fun until a fan catches one in the back of the head. From the article: To protect fans in the lower sections of the arena, seated below the flight path of pucks, the protective netting behind one of the goals will be "reconfigured" and stretched above those sections to cover them. It will be the only event of the skills competition where the netting will be placed above the crowd, as it is the final event of the evening. Morphinity 2.0
The skills competition is all gimmicky events. This is new and fun. What's with all the complaining? Yeah, the game sucks, but this doesn't have any bearing on the game.
Bugg
Out of ideas as why they have an All Star game. This sells the game, but an Olympic or World Cup does not, correct? Thanks, Bettman!

Thanks, Bettman! Yea, probably. A kid can watch this on TV, go buy a stick, start doing trick shots, and explore hockey from there. Having team USA play in South Korea in the middle of the night during the Olympics, not so much.

Kevin
Is the dislike for this from the hockey puritan standpoint? I have three boys at home and they all love to watch these kinds of things. They'll be glued to the tv while these trick-shots are happening. The NHL is smart here. Take a look at how popular Dude Perfect is on youtube. Their hockey trick shot skit from two weeks ago has 9.2 million views. Some of their slightly older stuff has almost 50 million views. Doing current shit and having fun with these superstars is a fantastic way to grow the game. Also gives a chance for these stars to show how personable they are.
