I don’t think Tortorella should win.  He was coach of the Flyers last season when they were a shit show. He might be a finalist but I think Tocchet wins it.

Why would last season matter? He was laying groundwork for the season they're having now. He was weeding out the players who weren't going to be part of the foundation.

I think he gets a ton of credit for that, regardless of what the results on the scoreboard said, he's teaching them to play the right way.

I think he should be a finalist but Tocchet has done more to turn around the Canucks in less time even though the Canucks have way more talent.  If last season didn’t matter the top teams coach would win every year.

Going back to the end of last season, and there were multiple coaches fired including GG who were Jack Adams finalists the year before.

The prior year certainly makes no difference when voting for this award. I don't think the people who vote on it take it into account at all.

There's a reason Fred Shero, Scotty Bowman and Al Arbour only won once.  The award is given to the coach who achieves the most with the talent he's given.

Right now there are probably 2 or 3 guys more likely to win than Laviolette.  Not because they are better than him but because they are doing what they are doing with less talent.

do coaches who are in their first seasons with their respective teams get preference for Jack Adams?

I don't think it's preference, but if you take a non-playoff team playoffs with the same roster, it bodes well. Think Mongomery in Vegas, IIRC.
