The Price Is Right - Connor McDavid Edition

The Rangers could finesse the cap issues by sending 3 guys they're all going to have to pay more to keep the other way.  Shesty we know about.  Laffy is likely to get extended if he has a really good season this year because the Rangers don't want him drawing an offer sheet in '25-'26 and waiting for after next year to extend him is too late.  Miller is cost certainty for this season and next and who knows where his ask is in '25-26?

I don't think the Oilers are going to trade McDavid for anybody over 30 in the deal.

They can’t trade him but under 3 circumstances…

He asks to be traded.

He tells them outright that he’s going to market.

It gets so bad they have to press reset and go rebuild.

The “we can’t afford to pay him” excuse isn’t real, cause they already have. On a max contract.

If hypothetically they traded him, assume he’s picked his destination and is willing to sign an extension there.

8 years. Max value.

Unless he wants to play on shorter deals.

Which we have no idea on.

They’d have to:

1) Take back a premium, right now, in his prime player with at least a reasonably sizable contract.
2) Get back 3-4 other assets of significance.

3) Probably move something else to facilitate in some way… another contract, an asset that helps the other team, a higher pick or prospect.

4) Get massive futures if it’s on a full reset.

That’s the real terms of what you’re looking at.

So the question is, what does that deal look like?

And there could be many packages that could fill the deal from multiple teams.

In no way is this deal easy.

Toronto could probably make it work.

Theyll be done with Tavares by then.

And let’s assume Nylander is long gone.

But it does get dicey.

Matthews contract goes up to over 13 next season.

And in 2 years Marner will be UFA. They’ll want to extend him

Obviously it’s different cause it’s McDavid.

But it’s probably $40 million+ total on 3 forwards

Theyve got that tied up in 4 forwards now and have for several years.

And they’ve won 1 playoff series.
