Haaaaaaaaave ya met their President of Hockey Operations?

Exactly my point.

Karlsson is unique.

A no doubt, 1st ballot, future HOF’er, but at the same time, not a winning player, and OMG! kind of deficiencies to his game.

Honestly… Karlsson chased the bag… which is fine… but when you chase the bag, you kind of give up your rights in a way.

He should have to languish in SJ for the next 3-4 seasons.

Count your money. Score your points.

Live in a great community. Rub elbows with those people.

But guess what?

Youre not coming close to winning.
And as good as you are, people get to still say that you suck.

Cause you’re a defenseman that can’t defend.

So you suck.

How did all of that go for Joe Thornton?

Cause guess what? When you fancy yourself as a serious hockey player, but go to a joke market like that, this is what you get.

A big dollar contract that no one wants in a market where they care more about whether the shopping plaza near their mansion gets a Whole Foods than they do about a winning sports franchise 10 minutes from their house.

He’s a joke.

agree with most of this but TBF to Karlsson when he did sign that contract, SJ were a perrenial playoff team and they went to the WCF his first year there. I doubt he thought they were gonna start sucking.

If he didn’t realize they were about to seriously regress, that’s on him.

You could see it coming.

Roster was getting older, and big money tied up in a number of those guys.

Handwriting was on the wall.

So he should stay away from New York

Well I’d first say that not only NY, but every other team should stay away from him.

And I think you have 2-3 seasons before actual, natural, expected and true regression happens here.

Igor alone keeps you very competitive over that span.

• The Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes remain the primary suitors for Karlsson. Each club has been granted permission to speak directly with him, and the Penguins have had multiple people other than Dubas, including select players, talk with Karlsson in recent weeks. Based on those talks, several people within the organization are confident Karlsson prefers to be traded to the Penguins.

Quote

Captain Sidney Crosby and top defenseman Kris Letang have endorsed acquiring Karlsson. Letang would remain the Penguins’ No. 1 defenseman and work on the top pairing. He is willing to change his role on the top power-play unit so Karlsson could quarterback it.

• Dubas was clear about all possibilities, including a potential trade, when meeting with defenseman Jeff Petry in Detroit in June. It’s understood that Petry, whose family lives in Michigan, is not open to playing as far away as San Jose, which is one reason the Penguins have sought to include a third team in any Karlsson deal. Petry has a modified no-trade clause in his contract, meaning he has a list of 15 teams to which he can’t be traded.

The Pittsburgh Penguins could finally be inching closer to landing defenseman Erik Karlsson with a second buyout window opening for the team this weekend. The pursuit of Karlsson by the Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes and others has been a dominant storyline for the past two months, and now there’s a sense that some clarity might be on the horizon, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on NHL Network yesterday.

Now armed with some additional salary cap flexibility thanks to Jake Guentzel’s ankle injury that should place him on LTIR for the first month of the season, the Penguins have more dice to roll in regard to a Karlsson deal. The team could also free up more space through that second buyout window, using one on someone like Mikael Granlund, who’s locked in at a $5MM AAV for two more seasons. It would be a change in pace for GM Kyle Dubas, though, who’s expressed publically he’s hesitant to go the buyout route. As GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he offloaded a first-round pick for the Carolina Hurricanes to take and buy out the final season of Patrick Marleau’s contract in 2019.
