Well yeah but there were 4th liners out this this summer that were better options and cheaper but we decided on other useless guys lol

I don't know. Rooney and PDG have been solid. Blackwell was solid until injured. They didn't get established guys but got solid role players. The problem is that you have fourth-liners playing off the fourth line.

Imagine trading McDonagh for Hajek because you wanted Shattenkirk instead, and then buying out Shattenkirk to pay for Trouba, all the while you could have just kept McDonagh for less money and term, and now you have to play Hajek. Holy fuck.

I wanted Lemieux, Boyle, Simmonds but not sure Simmonds was ever in play since he wanted Toronto after no other real other offers

McDonagh and Shattenkirk played on the same team, but yeah.

I wanted someone as well, but I don't think the fourth line is really the issue right now. They could use a faceoff specialist, though. I think the only player to struggle on the fourth line thus far is Gauthier. He looks lost.

Well no, but I’m just saying, that’s the difference between a team with a real 4th and ours. Sometimes offensive lines match up against and are ineffective and a real grinding hard hitting 4th line grinds you out a lucky goal (or two) and wins a game late.

Yeah, but his signing forshadowed McDs departure. It's exhausting. They also lose Pionk in the equation.

I don't think the team ever thought it would come to trading McDonagh when Shattenkirk signed. They were convinced they could do a quick retool and stay in it. Shattenkirk's first season just proved to them how bad they were. His contract along with others handcuffed them from re-signing McDonagh. In principle, trading McDonagh wasn't a bad idea. They tried selling their most valuable asset. They just sold him for a fucking bag of rocks is the problem.

That is an insanely depressing summation.

Fingers crossed Nils Lundkvist changes that tune

Scathing indictment of Gorton.

Varlamov just owns us. Can’t explain it

Shesterkin played very well

We were good defensively, got some grade a chances, won most of the puck battles. Just couldn’t beat the goalie. Undone by a mistake from a taxi-squad defenseman who went into the year like 9th on the D depth chart.

Way she goes boys

Right. The team needs to score. The powerplay was a dud and the usual suspects are still missing. Misplays by the 8th and 9th defensemen on the opening depth chart cost them goals.
