This is conflation. They're not mutually exclusive. If the team plays well and loses, players can (and do) develop and produce simultaneously with the team bettering it's drafting odds this summer.

He can skate a bit, but spent a lot of time chasing.

Thought that was interesting. I mean, he went from 7 min a night to playing 15 min. All while skating hard every shift. He must have been pretty winded on the bench in between shifts.
