How am I pivoting? We traded for a more productive player. Both had another year left on their deal. Neither team expected to resign the player in free agency. Both teams traded for two years of a star player, except McD was regressing at the time of the trade and Marty was a point per game player. Yes, its early to judge and McD is younger and has a better chance of rebounding next year, but currently our trade for Marty has worked out better for us than Tampa's trade for McD has worked out for them.

 

If Tampa fails to win the cup next year, their trade for McD is worse than our trade for Marty. Was that not his point? That our trade for Marty was bad and their trade for McD was good?

To be honest it's totally impossible to say that the trade for St.Louis was better than the trade for McD. How did it work out better for us than it did for them? We didn't win. They didn't win. That's a silly argument.

 

The point is, we got a player we knew probably only had a year left. They're getting a player that has far more in the tank regardless of if he's a star or not. We gave up a lot of assets for a year-and-a-half of MSL. They gave up assets for what could probably be the rest of McD's career.

While I know Tampa hasn?t hoisted the cup, this article raises interesting questions. If all of these players were still current rangers, where do you think we?d be as an organization? Was it the roster, the coach or the culture of the team that had the biggest impact on always being a bridesmaids and never a bride?
