New York Friar Blames Youngsters Who ‘Seduce’ Priests, Coaches; Sympathy For Sandusky

A prominent New York-based friar has sympathy for some pedophiles -- including defrocked priests and former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky -- saying they are sometimes "seduced" by their underage victims.

In some of these cases, children “looking for a father figure” are responsible for the relationship with someone in a position of power -- like a coach or clergy member, Groeschel told the National Catholic Register.

“Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster - 14, 16, 18 - is the seducer," said Groeschel, a founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.

Pressed on the point, Father Groeschel says "It's not so hard to see - a kid looking for a father and didn't have his own - and they won't be planning to get into heavy-duty sex, but almost romantic, embracing, kissing."

"I'm inclined to think, on their first offense, they should not go to jail because their intention was not committing a crime."

He also has some sympathy for Jerry Sandusky, convicted in June of 45 counts of sexual abuse of boys.

"Here's this poor guy - Sandusky - it went on for years. Interesting: Why didn't anyone say anything?"

In-fucking-credible.

I'm speechless. I'm honestly speechless.

I seriously think that this is half of the battle right there. Sexual Repression.

OF course it is, its not natural. Priests in my religion drink, get married, have kids, lead normal lives. I'm not saying there are no perverts (anyone in a position of power and worship can be tainted) but its my opinion that it helps.

Do Monks molest children?

All religions have their own 'priests'.

You can be a revrand if you want to be married and have consentual sex.

As I mentioned (and it was deleted) these are "sick" individuals that do this shit... or say this. (but that doesnt help the OPs case agaisnt religion)

I agree with you that they are sick people, but you don't think that celibacy for priests fuels the fire?

I don't. I think any profession where there is access to youngsters will draw pedophiles. Boy Scouts, campers, altar boys, etc.

Yes. We automatically put trust in these people, and are always shocked when we find out they're molesting kids.

1. I don't need "help" in my case against religion. All I need is doubt, and doubt is quite easy to provide when trying to debunk the credibility of religion.

2. Yes, these people are sick, and that sickness is perpetuated in the world of Catholicism (and Christianity) where sexuality is repressed, and where would-be followers are indoctrinated with this idea that sex is a sin. Christian schools around the country, for example, held a practice (that I can't say for sure is still in play or not) where they had their students literally tape all the pages about sexual reproduction, genitals, etc. together when "the human body" was being taught. I can't think of a better example of absolute, unequivocal repression than this.

3. This frair is a shining example of that repression. He's blaming the victims of RAPE for being irresistible — as if it's their fault they're walking around being all sexy like. Poor Jerry. How could he resist? Those awful little boys, and their beautiful plump little asses just begging to be violated. That poor, poor Jerry!

I agree, but solely talking about those involved in stricter religions, I honestly believe that sexual repression fuels it.

There are fucked up people in all areas of the public, but i think if some guy was home getting it on with his wife or girlfriend every night, he's a lot less likely to prey on children, or rape women/men.

Especially when a lot of people use it as a means to escape situations. A priest is guaranteed a home, a higher status in a community and, at least at one time, a lot of freedoms. This is the real problem in my opinion.

I went to catholic school all my life, never was taught any form of Christian science and had real sexed classes, and that was in a very conservative Philadelphia archdiocese. All the parochial schools here under the archdiocese are state accredited and get state money because the Philly school system is so bad, and part of keeping up with that accreditation is teaching a certain curriculum that meets its requirements. Now, we also had people come in and talk about abstinence being the safest sex blah blah blah, but that was separate from sexed classes.

The schools that didn't take in Philadelphia kids didn't have to give the exact same accreditation though from what I understand, and I know people from the far suburbs who got some different sexed classes, etc. so I guess it depends on the area. I know all the teachers who taught at my school though believed in evolution, pro choice was considered a personal topic (though we had anti-abortion talks and that was the message you always heard throughout the school) and religion classes were obviously part of the curriculum. We never had to do any of the things you outlined lol.

You're one of the lucky ones, I guess.

That's not even the best example I can provide for sexual repression in Christianity anyway. The Vatican's reaffirmation of their stance on the use of condoms in AIDS/HIV-ridden Africa is one of the largest, and most dangerous examples.

Of if you'd rather the laundry list of scripture speaking out against it, directly:
