I don't think the Kreider situation is as black and white as people think. It's probably somewhere in the middle between keeping him and trading him, and they are rather unsure with how to proceed. In which case, they are gathering as much information as they can for what both avenues look like. If I was in that position, I would want to know A) how much can he get me in a trade?, and B) how much would he cost long term? Then weigh those two things against each other. It seems pretty inaccurate to say for certainty that the Rangers have made a decision in either direction.

Pretty sure he can sign an extension now. I think the Jan 1st requirement on extensions is only for players who just signed a 1 year deal or went to arbitration.

The 2nd year caphit doesn't matter. If they keep Shattenkirk they still have to have his caphit there. This is not about next year. It's about whether they want to deal with the 1.4 million cap hit the 2 years afterwards in exchange for getting under the cap this year.

I'm not sure I believe he would have been re-signed already if that was the intent. They had a lot of other contracts to work out. They've worked most of them out now. It actually seems more likely that if he was going to get traded, it would have been at the draft. It didn't happen. They may have wanted to have this resolved this summer one way or another, but it's looking more likely than not that he will be on the roster this year. If they trade him right now, it will probably be at a pretty good discount.

You don't know this. It depends on the ask, as well as Kreider's desire to stay in NY even if it means a little bit less than he could get on the open market.

It was more like 40 games of improved play and production, but I understand your point. It is the same logic as stock though. You don't draft 17 year old kids for what they are on draft day. You draft them for what they will be in a few years. You don't sign RFAs to long term deals for what they are currently. You sign them to long term deals for what you project them to be for the long haul.
