  1. We're powered up again. ConEd said they had a fire in one of their access points (those sewer grates with their logos on it) and it basically fried all the wiring. A lot of homes on my block all lost power for like six hours while their emergency crew came in to fix it all. I guess the FDNY have to be called by default whenever these issues occur, not just to put the fire out, but to make sure that the basements all the wires are going into are all OK.

Glad to hear you and the Mrs. are ok. That's some crazy ish.

First day of being in an A Capella group and it's pretty fucking awesome.

    Video or didn't happen :p

  2. Not even for an occasion. Just bought one. I have like 50 something ties so I figured maybe add a bowtie to my collection. I spent like two hours practicing tying the fucking thing. I'm amazed I didn't strangle myself.

    LOL

I hear ya. I gave them a very brief try a couple of years back... never again. I kept picturing this kid from Problem Child whenever I put one on.

  3. Out of curiosity, is anyone as infuriated by bowties as I am? Got one and can't for the life of me tie it. I mean I've tied it, but holy hell does it come out kind of wonky looking. It's really annoying because I'm really good with neckties and I have a bunch of them. Got a bowtie and now I feel like a kindergartener.

Can't stand bow ties. Will never wear one. Do you have to for this occasion?

  4. I am super proud that Grace has been named to the USA rowing crew for the upcoming World Championships next month in Amsterdam. She will competing in the quadruple sculls (four people, two oars per person, no coxswain), which is an Olympic class boat. Unfortunately, because the USCIS doesn't do things on a days notice (or a month's, really), I can't be there to see it, but this is so so awesome and I'm happy to see her hard work pay off.

    Jules, that's amazing!

Man, what an honor. Congratulations to the Mrs. :D

  5. Question for you folks: is a lack of respect a reason to quit a job? It's decent money, but my boss curses me out in front of customers. Meanwhile, I'm 25 years old and taking the bar exam next summer. I'm not a 17 year old kid anymore.

I sat down with him and told him that if he had a problem with the way I'm doing my job then he should talk to me, not make his default reaction calling me a fucking dumbass with customers around. He agreed, and yet has continued to do so. Bear in mind that this place is corrupt as hell, so taking it to higher-ups will result in firing, which is worse for a resume than just bowing out gracefully.

Is a total lack of respect a valid reason for quitting? Or is it an overreaction on my part?

It's not an overreaction at all. That one reason alone is unacceptable, but I'm with Peetie on this. Find another job first, then leave.

  6. Wow, just got a call from the AA coach. They want Michael. This AA team could probably smoke most AAA teams. Now I just have to hope he wants to go there. This coach has such a good following that 4 tier 1 kids didn't try out for the team so they could stay with this guy.

They picked the team after the 1st night of tryouts. Soooooooo glad this is all over. Michael was so pumped to see his name on the list and is really looking forward to next season.

    Great news, congrats!!

  7. Anyone ever put their dog down before? Facing this ugly task tomorrow ? just curious if anyone has any experience with this?

Put mine down a little over a year ago. His liver was beginning to fail and we had no other alternative. I wasn't able to be there because I had an exam that very day, but my brother went. To this day he says he was glad he did. If I could have, I would have.

To say its difficult is an understatement. Even though I have another dog now that pain still lingers. Sorry for your loss. :(

  8. No, nothing significant. Wish we had a generator right about now though.

I'm glad to hear that. We finally got our power back last night. I hope you do too.

Went to the Colosseum today. Probably the coolest place ive ever been to. Had chills the entire time.
