They need someone to play with Kreider-Zib, 100%. Brooks suggested Vesey on the Up in the Blueseats podcast today. I don't know that that works considering how it failed not too long ago. I still think Cuylle is the best option to try, but more Roslovic is sure as shit not the answer.

It’s not worked in the past. That’s for sure.

Brooks also said that it’s on CK and Zib to get themselves going.

And also that Vesey deserves more ice time… cause he does. And he does the things necessary to beat a team like Carolina.

Trouba sucks, this award is meaningless and it's a joke that he won it. There.

Trouba is a 3rd pairing defender making 8 mill AAV. He better be a combo of Jim Jones and Billy Graham in the room for that kind of money.

Trouba is basically an average NHL defenseman.
He has games where he’s very impactful.

He has games where he’s absolutely terrible.

    Most nights, he’s average.

The issue with Fox is something I’ve said in prior posts when it comes with speed of the game. What makes him good is his high IQ and the methodical style he plays. But all of these teams in the playoffs are aggressive in nature and more aggressive than usual since the stakes are raised. He doesn’t have the opportunity to make those cute little plays he did in January against teams with bad PK’s or couldn’t defend the neutral zone. He needs to adjust, just like everyone, to the tempo of the playoffs. And you can like it, love it, hate it, whatever, the fact remains that he has had issues with that in the playoffs both this year and in years past. That’s not to say his playoff resume is total shit, or that he isn’t playing hurt right now or anything. He just needs to raise it up here, whether he is banged up or not. He needs to adjust.

The whole team has to make adjustments off that last game.

True. But nobody really cares how well he "leads" because he's not very good and makes too much.

That said, it's almost like no one cares about the Mark Messier leadership award, either.

It’s not that no one cares, per se.

Its just that those 2 other things take away from it.

His intangibles are real and impactful and can make a difference.

Just not enough to make up for that giant cap hit and his basically average play.

Roslovic is one of those players that looks good for a few games and then disappears for long stretches.  Kind of like Brodzinski but a bit better.  Before coming here I believe he played more center than wing.  I would try him at 3C if you can find a RW to play with Kreider and Zibanejad

Roslovic is the only one creating on that line. I think he isn't getting the recognition he deserves. First in on pucks, a bit creative. Put him with Chytil and Cuylle; sure. He definitely isn't useless. We can talk about useless and it will start and end with all players making more than 6 mil per year.

Rosy has tremendous speed and a high-level of skill.

    He’s just inconsistent.

Overall thus far through 9 games, he’s been above average.

    Couple nights very good.

    Couple nights pretty bad.

    Mostly in between.

    But altogether he’s been fine.

They win when they all play together for a full game.

Yeah he’s gotta be hurt. He’s not playing badly, as in I don’t see him making big mistakes or anything, but he’s not driving plays or creating opportunities like he normally does with the puck on his stick. He also seems to be crankier/whinier than usual on the ice, and I think it might be related.

    He’s nursing something.

    Its beyond obvious.

    I don’t think it’s major or serious.

But it’s nagging or hampering him some.

    The extra day helps him.

Also… someone needs to remind him that in the Game 7 disaster vs NJ last year, he was literally the worst player on the ice.

Norris trophy winners come to play in big games.

This MF’er needs to know that.

They've played one bad game in the last, what, 20? First clunker of the playoffs.

No reason for panic. They've got 2 chances to end it. If they win Thursday, this game is a blip.

I'm not worried. They've responded to adversity all season. I've got no reason to think they won't respond here.

    This.

It’s the 1st really lousy game they’ve had since the Philly game… that was over a month ago.

Circumstances notwithstanding, they’re still up 3-2.

And you need some adversity this time of year. Keeps you sharp.
As said, they’ve responded so well to this type of thing all season long.

And Carolina is a great hockey team.

Did anyone really think going in we weren’t seeing at least 6 in this series?

Wonder what that looked like at MSG. That feels like BrindAmour getting a matchup to me, and in spite of Gus-Trouba not passing the eye test, they were (prior to game 3) like, the most solid D-pairing in the playoffs for the fancystats.

I'd bet Laviolette was getting his matchups right until he didn't have control of them in Carolina.

They had an atrocious game together.

    Otherwise they’ve been solid.

Those stats are about as relevant as Carolina xGF%.

It's a ridiculous point you're trying to prove.

"Hey, we don't know why the record is better, but the record is better!"

    It's baseless.

I like him, I want him to play, I'm glad they win when he's in the lineup, but to act like he's the reason they win It's just so far from reality that I don't even know where to begin.

If the elbow connects then yes. Obviously if he’s closer I don’t think the elbow goes up once his arm makes contact with his body was my point.

I think trouba is just too slow for the canes

Until he hits one of them.

    Then he’s not too slow

Rempe affects the game on the ice from his seat on the bench.

That's not true for most guys who are in the role but he creates a genuine fear in the opposing team just by his presence and he and Goodrow chirp really well together from the end of the bench.

That’s a bit of an overstatement IMO

Im assuming you mean him being a deterrent. Which is fair. Cause I think he is to an extent.
It’s like owning a Great Dane. They see or hear that giant thing and they’re not coming in your house.

But there are factors involved in that, especially in a playoff series, and especially if it’s a close game.

Guys are less likely to pull some stuff in those games generally. And if they do, it’s stupid. Refs will call it.

Also, depending on the officiating and who it is and how they’re watching and treating him on a given night, that’s impacting what he may be able to do as well.

And once again, he’s not seeing the ice after the 2nd period.

If something were to happen to where Lavy felt compelled to put him out there, refs are gonna watch him like a hawk and anything he does, they’re gonna call it cause they know what he’s out there for.

  13. 2 minutes ago, RJWantsTheCup said:

Can’t say I disagree with you but again only 8-7 when he doesn’t play.  We can only surmise what playing or not playing him would do in the future.  Again there’s an element to him playing that’s unexplainable to what it means to the team.  There’s too big a gap in the record with and without him to not be considered.  At home where you can control the matchups should be a no brainer to play him in my opinion.  On the road is the real debate.

Yeah… I get the point about the record.

Its a valid point to make.

I just don’t know though how anyone could:

    A) Quantify his impact in those games

    B) Put a lot of stock in it given how few minutes he actually plays and the fact that in any game that’s close or of big importance he won’t even see the ice in the 3rd period and beyond.

    And again….

I am in no way knocking the kid.
It’s just that he’s very young. Has so little experience. At this point, what he brings and can actually do and be trusted with is a very, very small number of things.

I think he can absolutely evolve into someone that can play a niche, 4th line type role in the NHL moving forward

And he’s shown enough and been impactful enough to where he’s earned the opportunity at this point.

And I think there are some areas of the game that he can improve upon to cement the above for himself.

Hes just not at that point now

  14. 22 minutes ago, RJWantsTheCup said:

There’s arguments to both sides about Rempe playing or not and I understand both of them.  But, 8-7 record without him in the lineup should be speak loudly in my opinion.  There’s an intangible to him playing that really is hard to fathom or explain.  Doesn’t matter if he plays less than a minute or 6 minutes.

Listen… kid brings sone things. Some very good things.

    No one can deny that.

But as you go deeper in the playoffs, play teams that are better and deeper, and all that comes with that, his negatives start to neutralize, and potentially outweigh his positives.

    Thats all.

At home, where you can more easily control matchups, it’s the right way to go I think.

It’s because at home he brings energy to the building nobody else can and the team uses that to win it is not complicated

I get it for Game 5 at home.

    Thats not lost on me.

But the cries about pulling him out of the lineup and insistence that he be in it every game are misplaced.

There were many many many games he played that they came out slow.

I don’t understand the overwhelming desire to see this guy in the lineup.

Yes, he has his virtues and value. He brings size, energy, and physicality… and he’s potted a couple too.

But he plays 6 minutes a night, doesn’t see the ice after the 2nd period, you have to shelter him and watch the matchups he sees like crazy, and he gets called for penalties a lot.

Kid has a future in the NHL IMO. But right now he’s 21 with limited experience and too many things working against him to play him every night.

  17. Carolina was never getting swept.

Carolina was always going to find a way to win at least 1 in their building.

It shook out the way I think many of us expected and it’s fine.

Despite a poor 1st period, they tied it up, rest of game was pretty even.
And it took a fortuitous penalty call and a goal on a pretty low percentage shot very late in the game for Carolina to win it.

    No problem.

Go home and win Game 5.
