"It’s very dangerous when players lose hope,” Davidson said.
Another bad season and you could, potentially, be developing a losing culture.
The rangers are improving either way. To think that next season is the finishing touches on a rebuild is ridiculous. They can put a better team out there without panarin or kreider next year. They would also have plenty of cap space to make improvements down the line.
There is a middle lane here. Unbeknownst to many here.
-
I agree with what was said earlier, if we deal Kreider without having Panarin signed we risk taking a huge step back, if we end up with neither.

Only a problem for next season. This is a rebuild. It is not about next year.
-
In two years the rangers will start to have cap problems with that roster. It will be almost impossible to keep all the young talent they are assembling
-
Pavelski seems like the perfect guy to bring in right now. Three year contract won’t hurt you and he’s be s great guy to mentor and produce at a second line center role.
-
another top defenseman, after Troupa signs for 8 to nine mill.a year ,how are the rangers going to afford another top defenseman
Probably not right now. But with dead weight in Staal, Smith and shattenkirk eating up $18m a year or so there is plenty of cap to pay another top defenseman as soon as they are gone. Two years they are all off the books.
-
Every contract that gets signed, I get more and more convinced than I already was that the Rangers should lock up Panarin at all costs for two reasons. First, he's well worth what he'll get unlike the contracts I am seeing some other players get. Second, the contract Panarin gets will eventually be the same contract a lesser player will get within probably 2 years. Make it happen Gorton. 7x12. Anything less is house money.
Anything under $12m a year is house money? Any contract that size better be a slam dunk if it isn’t it has potential to be a team killer. Gorton is doing a great job setting this team up for years. With all these moves it does the exact opposite for me. Panarin is not the only option to get where the rangers want to go. Panarin is not a franchise player in my opinion. He’s not Ovechkin, Kane, or jagr. Even those guys were unable to win anything without having a big time center who was close in status. The rangers will still be looking for that guy with little cap space to get him if they sign panarin. Kakko could be, probably wil be a top wing. The rangers should spend that money on a center or another top defenseman. If not now then wait.
-
Worst case scenario is that he doesn’t sign long term and Gorton trades him at the deadline as a rental for more than he gave up to get him.
-
Even if Gorton can’t get him signed he’s worth more than what they gave up at the deadline. Great trade.
-
Completely disagree.
I'd take Panarin/Karlsson over Hall/Pietrangelo all day long and twice on Sunday.
You still on board with this? Pieterangelo seems to me to be the better player after this postseason.
-
Hmm. Have you actually BEEN to California?
I live there now. It?s incredible. And Central/Coastal CA is even more beautiful than the rest.
I have and while the scenery maybe nice the people there are hell bent on telling others how to live. No thanks
-
I agree
Though I think Karlsson stays in San Jose and takes the massive deal he has on the table from them, if that is in fact the case. He?d be foolish to turn down all that money from them. No one else comes close to that amount for him. And his homesick wife can go fuck herself. Who wouldn?t want to live out there? One of the best places in the world to live if you?re young, rich and famous. And she?s pining for Ottawa?
The more you hear about her and her behavior, the more I think that shit with her and Hoffman?s wife was bullshit or Karlsson?s wife was the main party responsible for that whole mess
Couldn?t pay me enough money to live in the cesspool that is California. Living here is bad enough.
-
And he’s not a 1d. He’s probably more of a second pair guy.
-
I think, long-term, the greater value is in keeping those 3 assets around as opposed to Trouba.
Like Trouba a lot. But I don’t know that he’s a franchise type D, and that’s a stiff price.
Agreed. The rangers are set up to enjoy the benefits of having multiple cheap assets contributing at the nhl level for years. I don’t get why they are seemingly linked to every player that flies in the face of that. That is a huge price for trouba and then you have to sign him to 7 years x $7.5. No thanks.
-
Then you keep Kreider, hopefully at a reasonable price, and/or you make trades - modeled after the Zibanejad acquisition. Last 2 seasons alone we've seen top-line players get moved below market value, ROR, Skinner, Stone
Can't afford another Spooner, Vesey or Namestnikov wasting and taking roster spots. They need to be filled by difference makers and youth. No more Brickleys or McLeod's either! (Maybe Reaves, that might be fun and affordable)
I like plan b.

It is extremely important for the development of young players that they be put in a situation where they can be successful. And at this point, they young guys here need to start learning how to win, or you wont see the necessary development. For this to happen, you need to add players that allow young guys to slot into the lineup where they are not overwhelmed, and can also learn from players around them.
A top 6 of Vesey, Zibanejad, Strome, Fast, Kreider and Buchnevich is not "continuing the rebuild", it's failing to develop and wasting the rebuild.
Agreed. That doesn’t mean the only way of achieving that is by signing a guy to a 7 year contract for $80m. There are other ways of fostering a productive atmosphere that allows for growth.
And if that’s your sentiment what happens if panarin signs elsewhere? Do you then just allow your kids to develop in the counterproductive atmosphere you describe? I assume you wouldn’t, so then who are you getting?
One player will not foster the atmosphere you wish for. He can be a big part of it but the atmosphere you describe is much bigger than one guy.
-
Panarin isn’t as good as what people thought of nash before he came here. Besides nash the rangers had some pretty good players along side hank.
-
Not ever getting elite talent to NY and wasting another franchise player with a half assed attempt at being a contender.
Which franchise player are you referring to?
-
It's amazing how the NYR mgmt. continuously gets saddled with these horrific contacts and the players that come with them.
Yup so let’s go sign guys for 7 years at over $10m a year. What could possibly go wrong?

Max Domi has diabetes and he manages just fine.
And, as mentioned before, Celiac's is an annoyance that won't affect performance.
I wasn’t concerned with the celiacs. I was just surprised to to only hear of his diabetes now. Thought maybe it was just diagnosed and if it would effect anything. Mainly draft status.
-
Just read that Kakko has both type 1 diabetes and cieliac disease. Anyone else read that and have any idea if it’s a concern for his career
-
Totally agree the rangers are in a win win situation here. I just don’t get why anybody would be disappointed either way.
-
I’m surprised to see so many wanting Kakko over Hughes. Both are fantastic prospects. Getting either is a godsend. Im kind of glad it’s the devils choice. I think Kakko is the safer bet to become a star but Hughes to me has the higher ceiling. Just watching the worlds he is still a step faster in pace than anyone on the ice. That includes some fantastic nhl players. His size is a concern but he is 17 and it’s not like he’s a midget. He’s what 5’11”? While he’ll never be huge, I would expect him to add some muscle. He’s just so dynamic that it would be foolish for the devils to pass on that. Kakko is almost already a proven commodity. I’ll try to make maybe a stupid comparison.
Hughes could be a MacKinnon while Kakko is probably Rantanen. Both would be a great get but do you feel like gambling a bit.
-
Next years draft has been hyped for a couple of years. Lafrenierre and byfield are probably better than anyone in this draft. Raymond from Sweden is also going to be a star. Nexts years draft is supposed to rival 2003.
I’ve been looking to see if there is any protection on the Dallas pick if they resign zucc. I can’t find anything.
-
Anyone know if zucc signs with Dallas is the 2020 first lottery protected?
This Feels Like the End for Chris Kreider and the Rangers

The team is already improved with doing nothing else but adding Kakko. How much they improve and how quick this rebuild comes to an end will depend on the development of the kids, not what ufa they sign. The ufas will help speed it up but without the kids it’s all for naught. Which takes me to my opinion on Panarin. Signing him is great but if Anderson, chytil, Howden, their entire defense, etc don’t become what we hope than the rangers are still searching for that contending team with less flexibility
I like the idea of a panarin type, I just don’t like the timing. I think it assumes to much about what they have, when they’d be better served waiting and seeing what they need. Top line wings don’t seem to be in short supply for this team. Defense and center are what worry me no less goaltending.
