Fast, Rangers Mutually Interested in New Contract

The New York Rangers and Jesper Fast are attempting to work out a contract extension, sources tell Blueshirt Banter.

Fast, who is in his home country of Sweden, spoke with both Head Coach David Quinn and General Manager Jeff Gorton as recently as today (Friday). Quinn specifically has gone to management and vehemently vouched for Fast’s return, Blueshirt Banter has learned.

Fast’s strong priority is to remain a Blueshirt but, as a source claimed, “he knows his worth.” The 28-year-old is an unrestricted free agent and his camp believes he would earn a contract on the open market that pays him $4 million annually. However, he would be willing to take a discount in order to make things work with the Rangers, requesting compensation that would fall short of that figure but still pay him an average annual salary in the range of $3.2 million.

If someone wants to give him $4 million per, then he should take it and they’re overpaying him

He's projected to be a 4th liner on this team in the near future. 3-4m is a lot. I wonder if they'll sign him and expose him to expansion.

3.25M was my max for Fast. Ideal was 2.5-2.75. He's worth the premium. 4 years @ 3.2M? Draw it up and call it a day

I'm really doubtful he'd cash in on the open market the way he would with normal free agency. Teams aren't going to be as willing to shell out more for midling players with the flat cap. I think $3M is a perfectly reasonable number and I'm a big proponent of Fast. Anything more than $3M is tough with his likely soon-to-be reduced role.

Totally agreed. Especially when we’ll have big impact players on cost controlled deals assuming Laf is ready to roll and Kakko is ready to break out, as well as studs on the back end.

    He's always been a bottom 9 player and he's always been a 25 to 30-point player.

If he's on your fourth line, he makes your fourth line more reliable and able to eat more minutes.

This is an absolutely fair deal for both sides.

Yup, and even if he's overpaid in a few years, you can offset with ELC deals.

Very fair appraisal of Fast's worth to us and as a known entity, it should get done. ($4M is not happening...not in these times.)

He's an elite fourth-liner if he is one. Produces like a reliable third.

As already said by others, he's a 3rd liner, not a 4th liner. I'd prefer 3 years, but I'm not losing him over 1 extra year. It's an easy contract to get rid of if absolutely needed. Low risk.

He's worth 3.2. He's worth 1.2 more than the kind of player you would get as a replacement for 2.0. While some posters forever bemoan every shift he takes on one of the top two lines, the fact is that he can play that role. It is not ideal in the long term, but in the shorter term, yes. Number one, he can contribute some offense and has been decent at deflections and trench goals. Number two, if the top line is facing a fearsome No. 1 opposition line, one of the best five in the league, having one defensive specialist on the first line for that game is not a bad idea.

Only bad point is that if he is taking a discount, he is right to insist on a NMC and would have to be protected in the expansion draft. Right now, we don't have that many good forwards in need of protection, so that may be okay.

2.85 4 years. No to NMC, Take it or leave it. Cap is crap, if he gets a better deal, it will be marginally in today’s NHL.

Good call on him wanting a NMC. Definitely puts this idea in the "no" category.

Don’t know how credible he is but Anthony Scultore of ForeverBlueshirts has an article on Fast where he says that he met with management and that he won’t be back.

Jesper Fast: “It would have been fun to stay, I’m open for anything.”
    By Anthony Scultore

On his future with the Rangers

“We have had discussions, but it is still uncertain how it will go,” Fast said. The question not asked was when those discussions took place. What Fast went on to explain is that he doesn’t expect to have any further discussion until after the draft and right before free agency. “I have to wait that time,” he finished.

On September 1st, I spoke to a source with knowledge of the situation that told me “the window has passed.” This statement and what Fast reveals is that those discussion took place before my article.

“Both me and my wife have really appreciated these seven years in New York,” Fast continued, “I had a good role with the team.” Then his comments seemed to hint that his time with the Rangers was done. “It would have been fun if I got the chance to stay. At the same time, a new role would be exciting. I’m open to anything.”
