It's not the AAV, it's the term. Seven years for a guy who hasn't played a full season in the last seven years is wild. It's also just the cost of doing business, I guess.

I think both are a bit much, but the term is worse.

It's this. He's giving you 45-55 points/max...It's Caps paying for past performance, like they did with Backstrom.

Hard to build a winning team paying for past performance instead of what a player is currently worth.   Don't expect the Caps to be very good this year any way.

I doubt he plays close to the end of that deal in a Caps uniform. Once Ovechkin breaks 99’s goal record and eventually sails off into the sunset, that team is going to go through a major and much needed reset.

To be fair, the Caps aren't trying to build a winning team. They're now entirely designed to get Ovie to 895. Then they'll rebuild. Hard.

Wierd contract. $5.5 x5 would've been my guess. As mentioned....too much money and too much term.

 

Washington is not a concern. Fell off a cliff after the cup win.

This exemplifies what has been wrong with Washington for about 4 years now. Their GM stinks and makes horrible decisions.

Cap is going up but this is a buyout contract in the end. Caps gonna be rebuilding in a season or two (now) anyway

Yeah, at this point Washington is just riding out Ovechkin until he gets to 895. That's fine, but they've also made really bad moves and still could have been good in the process. lol Oh well.
