Stacey Roest has been the director of player development for the Lightning for the past 10 years (https://www.nhl.com/lightning/team/hockey-staff/stacy-roest). He couldn’t cut it in the NHL as a player. Tampa doesn’t seem to have a problem spitting out high end talent, so not sure it really matters that Ortmeyer is ours.

You're right. It doesn't matter. These guys aren't skills coaches, they're life coaches. I'd much prefer having guys like Ortmeyer, Glass, etc. working as development directors because they know the process. They know the journey. What does an über skilled former top pick who circumvented the AHL have to offer guys struggling with transitioning from league to league or team to team? The hard-workers, the grunts, they're the ones that can offer a perspective about being bussed around in the AHL, dealing with droughts, questioning whether their NHL future is legitimate, etc.

They had Tuomo Ruutu working with Kakko over the last two years. Helping him with the mental aspects of the game and acclimating to a new country, culture, etc.

I don't know how much you expect from these guys. Kakko and Lafreniere have had physical and skill deficiencies that have held them back mainly. They're NHL talent. They have a host of coaches working with them already. I also don't think Tanner Glass can use his Dartmouth education to make Chytil any smarter.

It's been reported that Ortmeyer, Glass, and co. alternate week-long trips to Hartford to overview development but also to serve as resources for the players there.
