Don?t know why but I read that as the Rangers signing him for 4 years. My brain completely ignored the NYI abbreviation and the word extension

4 year deal for Martin while Barzal remains unsigned is really odd. May be Barzal is simply haggling for a few extra bucks and it will all be done in a bit. Clear they aren't giving him a ling term max $ deal. . This looks very much like the 2nd time in the last few years the Isles got cheap with their best player. The NHL is not like MLB when it comes to free agency, but hard to understand how that works long term.

Money isn't terrible, but the 4 years is atrocious. Like Bugg said, they have Barzal that needs to be signed, and they worry about this guy.
