He moves laterally with both speed and precision, not overshooting his marks often and recovering well when he happens to misread a shot or the play breaks down in front of him. When there's a scramble in front of the net, he's confident enough in himself that he doesn't try to fall on the puck, either; he stays on his knees and gets into position

Garand was a top goalie in the WHL and an important part of why Kamloops was such a good team. Garand is a fun player to watch because he is exceptionally quick. He can get to almost any puck and can steal a game due to how consistently he can make the high difficulty stop. Garand isn’t the biggest goalie and it’s a reason why he was the eighth goalie picked in his WHL Bantam Draft. But he has consistently shown he can put up numbers and help a team despite his size. His size and good but not exceptional IQ are why some scouts don’t buy the pro projection, but I think he tends to stay in control, doesn’t hurt himself, and the elite quickness is going to translate.

So, what happens here? Garand is clearly lining up as a potential future NHL starter. Doe he shuttle to NYC from Hartford this year, do an understudy gig for 1-2 seasons then demand a trade when it's clear that Igor is unlikely to get hit by a bus or some similar role-opening misfortune? If he was two years behind this schedule, you could see him taking over eventually. But I can't imagine Garand being happy with 2/3 time on the bench for very long. Potentially serious trade bait when the time comes, though.

While he's on his ELC, it doesn't matter what he wants. Team decides.

Team also can't afford Shesty next contract so Garand (assuming he pans out) is a serious insurance policy and some leverage.
