Giacomin
Odd quote from Staal since the December schedule is extremely favorable and especially light recently. Odd that yesterday on Sirius they said Galchenyuk would be a healthy scratch, followed by an ummmm. Today he is listed as out (undisclosed). Even an 'upper body' or 'lower body' designation would signal that it is not a recurrence of his prior off ice problem. Too bad Raanta is out for the season, he was working out well there. Horrible eye injury to Grabner. Zona has its share of serious injuries that impact them. Nick Schmaltz was the best player in that trade. He's had a couple of good games already and is fitting right in on the first line. He was good last year, not sure why Chicago gave up on him this year. ThirtyONE
You know, when we're healthy we're pretty damn deep up front. Deep with 3rd liners. When not healthy, they're a good AHL team.

Those "stars" need to be drafted.
Dunny
Just add Panarin to this forward mix and you're good to go as you're also adding Kravtsov and getting some growth from Howden/Chytil/Andersson. Use Zucc to get another pick or D man, though I doubt he gets us a useful roster ready D man. The problem is at the back end.

They're tied for worst ROW in the league. One established scoring winger is not going to launch them upwards.
Phil
They're probably flirting with the playoffs if they add Panarin, but the rebuild is still like 3-5 years out from total completion IMO. The defense issue simply cannot be understated. Unless they trip and fall into a first-pairing rock solid #1 tomorrow, they're waiting out a whole new crop (Miller, Lundkvist, Rykov, etc) who will largely usher out this group (probably in its entirety). Dunny
Yeah, that's going to take some time and I'm not sold on any of their D prospects being legitimate beyond Miller. I bet packaging Vesey and Zucc could take care of one slot, Hayes would certainly take care of another but Hayes leaving is just a hole somewhere else. Agreed. There might be one roster defensemen on this team who'll be on the team the next time the Rangers make the playoffs, unless the Rangers do something drastic and overhaul the current group overnight via trade. The players coming down the pike are not even in the AHL yet.
Dunny
Hajek is starting to worry me a bit. I get he's not going to be an offensive guy at the NHL level but not contributing one iota on offence in the AHL makes me think that the AHL is moving pretty fast for him. Pete
Which forward group? Hartford. They're 18th in the NHL in GF and don't have a player in the top 20 in scoring.

But that's kind of why I'm saying I still think this is 3-5 years out in reality. Because the goal isn't "make the playoffs again," but "win the Cup." To that end, they've got a ways to go. I tweeted it after the Lightning game, but it's worth repeating: "If the Lightning are the gold standard for what a contender should look like in today’s NHL (they are), the #NYR are only about six D, one franchise F, and two high-scoring Fs away from resembling their template. So, what, only four-to-five years of work ahead? "
