Stephen
Looks a little steep but he can solidify the bottom six for those seven years. The cap space on the other hand...
Phil
He's a top-four defenseman, today. VGK is probably banking some hope on him becoming a top-pairing D over the life of the deal, similar to the Rangers' with Skjei. But this guy can flat out play. That's for sure. Especially in today's game when an activated defense needs to be part of the offense.

This team with Theodore being a top-four defenseman will be able to make some noise in the next few years. And he's mainly a passer to help their east-west system of hockey. VGK is representing the new age of hockey.

Dunny
new age of hockey? Until they start getting burned on it. Which will happen. MLB went through a phase like this, too.

Phil
It's a roundabout way of defining the valued characteristics in today's NHL: speed, skill, a premium on offense. Phil
Not as valued as they are now. If you compare the offensive depth of your average NHL team today compared to ten years ago, it's staggering. Albatrosss
but that just means there's more talent in hockey. actually I would argue that VGK are opposite of "new age of hockey". New age of hockey is all about drafting young blood and having an influx of youth every season due to the cap. VGK is an expansion team that basically built a team with free agency

The amount of talent available is growing. No longer do you need to fill the 3rd, 4th, and bottom 2 defenseman with character grinders. The players coming up next 4+ years will only continue this trend.
