Rangers Re-Sign F Boo Nieves to 1-Year/$708K Extension

I mean, I suppose you're entitled to your opinion, but your suggestion that a player who has played in nearly 900 NHL games isn't just worthless, but worth less than a guy who played in just 43 is, well, something.
My eye test just hated Moores game. He contributed zero to every team after his good year with Tampa. The more I watched him the greater I hated his play.

I see it as a perfect spot for him and the team. I don't want to see Andersson, Howden or Chytil wasting away on a 4th line.

Nieves can only improve on what hasn't been that bad of a run in the NHL, given the circumstances (AV). If he's given an honest shot, and put in situations that suite his skills, yet fails... Well then, that's on him, or tough luck. It's a spot they can afford to try out a last chance player like Nieves. If anything they may gain a reliable speedy center whom may be able to be a pk specialist ala Dom Moore. A useful 4th liner.

From what I could see and read about, regarding development week, one player was head and shoulders above the rest. Chytil dominated. If we can plan on one thing it is Chytil making the top 9 out of camp.

Howden looked good, but has never played against men. A few months in Hartford (top line, first PP) is perfect for him, while coach sorts out of the mess in NY.

Lias is the tricky one. Will his skating be improved. A competent 4th line, not saddled with McLoud, is fine. Lias may not be ready, but could develop well under this coach w/o the pressure of playoff expectations. Say on a line with Fast and Vesey? That is a line that gets regular shifts and can be on the ice at the end of games.

I don?t necessarily disagree with that, although I think it?s the makeup of that 4th line which determines whether it?s good or bad for Andersson and Howden to play there. Play them alongside solid players and it could be just fine for them. But considering we?ve got

Zib

Hayes

Chytil

Andersson

Howden

Namestnikov

Spooner

Nieves

I don?t see him as even close to being a certainty for the 4C spot.

This was my point, made more effectively by Gravesy. I'm not arguing that Nieves was necessarily a bad player but that - based on added and emerging personnel - the competitive standard for 4C in MSG is rising. He would need to deliver at the level of his very best last year (or an upgrade) to qualify for the same minutes he got last year. Got my doubts whether he has that in him but again, hopefully the available opportunity will increase the compete level and bring the best in all the lads.

OMG, you were doin so good until you mentioned the most useless player in Rangers history. Domonic Moore was more worthless then McIlraths dinkleberry. How that turd continued to play in the NHL is more in question then the signing of McCleod.

Because he could skate, win faceoffs, kill penalties and carry the puck.

I was hoping Mcllrath would make it. Truth is, he just doesn't have it. He hasn't made it.

Moore on the other hand has been so useless that he's managed to have an NHL gig for 15 years. Not sure how that works out. You know, being useless and all.

I'm not sure we see either Namestnikov or Spooner playing center for this team if Hayes is here. The team has very little to offer on the wing past Kreider, Zucc and Buch. So, obviously both can and have played wing with some success, and that's very likely where they fit in the teams current make up.

Playing those guys on a fourth line would either be a waste, or by some miracle it would mean they are crazy deep.

Kreider- Zib - Buch

Namestnikov- Hayes- Zucc

Vesey- Chytil/Andersson- Spooner/Fast

McLeod/Ronning- Nieves- Euro signing/Fast

I don't think we see a roster that has all three of Chytil, Andersson and Howden playing on it THIS season. No matter how good they play.. It's kinda exactly why I don't want to keep Hayes around.

If all three kids excell and Hayes is freshly signed to a 5 year deal possibly or most likely with some kind of no movement clause, puts the Rangers in a bad spot. How often is a player signed to a long term deal, and then traded that year or even the next? I'd imagine not often. Can't look good for future potential signees.

We did exactly that to Stepan.

I actually think Anderssons game is quite well suited to centering the 4th line, provided he doesn't have to play with trash like McLeod.

As someone said, Fast-Andersson-Vesey could be a decent 4th line.

I also have hopes for Chytil centering the 2nd line.

So, for example

Kreider-Zib-Buch

Namestnikov-Chytil-Zucc

Meskanen-Hayes-Spooner

Vesey-Andersson-Fast

But like I said he has a chance of making that 4c spot his. I just don't think it's anywhere near a foregone conclusion.

I don't think it is bad to start Lias at 4c. Maybe Quinn could do something to augment his minutes and continue his offensive development like put him on the 2nd PP unit.
