Pete Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 http://www.takepart.com/sites/default/files/styles/tp_content_wide/public/dunkindonuts_2.jpg?itok=4iwNRcKY In a weird and misguided effort to sell more glazed fried dough to the masses, Dunkin' Donuts in Thailand came under fire this week for an ad campaign featuring a model in blackface. Pressure from the activist group Human Rights Watch caused the company to pull the ad today, but the CEO of the Thailand operation, Nadim Salhani, called the public outcry, "absolutely ridiculous." "We're not allowed to use black to promote our doughnuts?" Salhani told the Associated Press. "I don't get it. What's the big fuss? What if the product was white and I painted someone white, would that be racist?" http://www.takepart.com/article/2013/08/31/dunkin-donuts-blackface-ad?cmpid=foodinc-fb -- Le sigh.
High and Wide Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 I can see how this would be a problem here, but I don't see the issue in Thailand.
Pete Posted September 4, 2013 Author Posted September 4, 2013 There's a problem if this is an issue here.
Tonybologna Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 They made her the exact same color as the donut, she's supposed to be the donut's color not "blackface". I could see us having (or probably already have had) some commercial with maybe gatorade, skittles, m&ms where people are turning the different colors of the drinks/candies. It's like that but with the color of a chocolate donut. I'd hate to think if it were a white person turning the color of a brown M&M here in a U.S commercial we'd all be offended. So ridiculous, how sensitive does someone have to be for THIS to offend them?
Dunny Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 These (activists) are the idiots keeping racism alive and well.
McDougalfaschnitzer Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 If you showed me that picture without any context, I never would have equated it with blackface.
Parsley Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 If you showed me that picture without any context, I never would have equated it with blackface. :word:
Ba Ba Bluey Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Not sure why everyone is becoming more and more sensitive these days. You'd think after all the shit that's happened over the years, the pussification of pop culture would be at a low.... It's like everything is going backwards.
L'albatros Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 here's the whole ad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQMKqeHgEEs
Parsley Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 here's the whole ad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQMKqeHgEEs WOW. People need thicker skin. I want a few donuts, by the way.
Pete Posted September 5, 2013 Author Posted September 5, 2013 I'm surprised people aren't offended by the explosion in her mouth.
Keirik Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Only she is offended by the explosion in her mouth
