There's only two good teams in the Metro (Rangers and Canes), so the idea path would be playing the Atlantic division once in the ECF and then the Western Conference, with as much home ice as possible. In the Atlantic are the Bruins, Panthers, Leafs, and Lightning, so only having to play one of those teams is better than two of those teams.

With the remaining games in the regular season, the Rangers can work to be playing the right way entering the post-season - let's say the last 5 games of the regular season are the most important. They can also maximize their home ice by finishing in the standings as high as possible. Our last meaningful data point is the Devils series in the playoffs. Laviolette's main job is to help the Rangers more consistently achieve deep playoff runs, a failure of his predecessors. I'm pointing the finger at Kreider and Zib. A likely first round playoff opponent is the Lighting. With what I've seen with Kreider and Zib in the Devils series and so far this year, I don't see us beating the Lightning with K & Z playing level from last year's post-season. If we can't get Kreider and Zib to raise their game significantly in the playoffs, it's going to be a short post-season. They failed in the Devils series, and we won't have another data point until this year's postseason. If the coaches don't demand more from them, by default their performance is deemed acceptable. And as leaders if their performance is acceptable, every other player can measure their own compete level against what is acceptable from the leaders.

I'm sorry you missed the main points of my post. Over the years the Rangers have treated the young players different than the veterans. Players like Laf, Kakko, Rempe have had TOI cut and/or healthy scratches because of play not meeting standards. Vets like Kreider, Zib, Panarin, Trocheck, have largely escaped having TOI cut, or getting dropped from PP1 to PP2 or off the other power play, or other playing time consequences that would get their attention. It's most important for your core veterans (especially those with 'A' on their chest) to set the standard of play and an example for the young players. Torts has done an amazing job to have the Flyers in third place. I've isolated the main points of the Torts quote for emphasis on my point(s) below. "For me, I don't care the name, the stature, veteran, especially this time of year," Tortorella said. "I need him to be better, that's all." The contrast I am drawing between Philadelphia and the Rangers is 1. Tortorella is holding all players to his standard - he's not letting stars, veterans, or players with the most TOI get a free pass if their play doesn't meet standards. 2. Tortorella expects better from a player, so that player is a clean scratch. He knows that Couturier is going to be key for the playoff push - so the time for corrective action is during the regular season.

We're going to keep a young player out of the lineup to make a point. But we're not going to healthy scratch any of the vets who went at half speed for multiple shifts.
