So we're going into the playoffs expecting Panarin to keep his 0.58 G/PG and 0.88 A/PG (1.47 P/PG) while his career playoff average is 0.81 P/PG? That's a recipe for disappointment right there.
We're not winning anything if Zibanejad (and his line) doesn't step it up in the playoffs. We're gonna need 2021 Zib (10 goals, 24 points in 20 games) and not 2022 Zib (1g, 4p in 7 games).
We said the same about Fox and Shesterkin earlier in the season (and Panarin before the season). We're not winning anything unless our best and most important players (G, 1D, 1C + Panarin) are playing their best hockey in the playoffs. The other 3 are doing it right now, Zib needs to do the same.
The Panarin line is the single most dangerous line in the NHL. It's not even hyperbole - they've scored more goals than any single unit in the league. Part of that is consistency—I don't think they've been split up—but that's just a different level of danger and scoring than Panarin has ever had in his career. Ditto Lafreniere. Ditto Trocheck.
In the same way we can look at Panarin's priors and say "hmm, that's concerning", we also need to look at the current reality and go "oh, that's also pretty different". This is the best version of Panarin we have ever seen. He's working with the best version of Lafreniere we've seen so far, and the best version of Trocheck we will probably ever see. Opposing teams should fear this line the way the Mackinnon line, the Kucherov line, or the McDavid line is feared. And the cool part about that is that if they do, we have the Zibanejad line ready to strike, and that third line isn't exactly bad either. They work hard.
I'm perfectly fine with Trocheck as the "1C" and Zibanejad being a Selke-level 2C who puts up his .8 points/game. Fine by me.

Man if Buffalo had just beaten Detroit yesterday they'd be right in the race and I would love to play them. Now they are basically done.
If we hold on to the 1 seed I think we're a shoe in for the 2nd round at this point. Tampa is a tough matchup but Im still confident we win that series. Still, I'd rather not have to face Kucherov if he goes beast mode. Though if we contain him a bit the rest of their squad is MUCH more than manageable for us.
I'd rather Pitt miss the playoffs just for the LOL Factor but they're also getting hot and while it doesn't faze me on winning the series, Id rather be able to lock up a 5 game series win against any of the other teams in WC2 contention
Right now, Moneypuck has us at like 84% to make the second round and 14% to win the cup.
I like those odds.
Now, the other side of this...tonight, we root for Toronna. By tomorrow at 11 p.m., we could be one point from first in the East, and if the Sabres beat the Stars, potentially one point from the President's Trophy.

I swear, Kreider will be skating around with the cup over his head, and some of you will yell about his victory lap technique.

Two of our last five against the Islanders. We can put them out (or close to it) if we win both games, or alternatively they can cost us the Presidents trophy and (more importantly) the number one seed in the east if they win both of those games. A split seems to be the most likely result which might lead to them squeaking in.
Five games left, everything to play for.
Although I don't think the Islanders are a good team, two teams out of this list of five will make it into the playoffs
Islanders
Capitals
Flyers
Red Wings
Penguins
Hard to believe I'm even saying this, but the Sabres are right there too.

I was thinking about this yesterday too. I'm wondering if Kreider's just at the point where he's like "I don't care about the 82, just the 16". His effort was noticeably better in the last few games too.
Still, what a fucking animal if that's the case. Nonchalantly scoring 38 goals? Cmon man!
