when this team gets deciamated in free agency they'll be lucky to be a playoff team. this might have been the end of the road for them.

I'd hold off on this take for a minute.

The Canes might have a lot of free agents, but they also have a lot of cap space, a great prospect pool, and a rather nice track record of finding guys who can play BrindAmour's game in FA.

They're going to take a step back this offseason. That feels undeniable—they simply cannot keep Pesce, Necas, Jarvis, Guentzel, Skjei, Teravainen, and and. But—but—they can position themselves very well to still be a playoff team and upswing fast if they play it well.

It may be PTSD from last year, which I understand. Until this group proves they can stand up to adversity in the playoffs, those questions are going to exist unfortunately. If they come out swinging tomorrow and deliver a knockout blow to a Hurricanes team that most of the hockey world orgasms over seemingly daily, that would go a long way in silencing the doubters; some of which exist in this fanbase.

Need to jump out the way we did in Game 1 and really have them chasing.

I don't necessarily disagree with this, but fucks sake - this is the VERY FIRST adversity they faced, and even now, ii's barely adversity. Losing game 4 isn't adversity - they got unlucky and it happens. In game 5, they held off a VERY desperate team for 43 minutes and then finally gave way.

They lost two games of 5 in a best of 7 so far. They're not trying to rally from 2-0 or 3-0, their backs aren't against the wall, and even now,  there is room for error. Now, they shouldn't be THINKING that way, but it is all true. They built a cushion, and while rest is an asset, so is the 3-0 lead.

Carolina still has the far more difficult task of winning two, including a game 7 at MSG. The Rangers have been put on notice that Carolina can in fact step it up and win games. it's on the Rangers to show that there's another level to them too, and it's enough to send the Canes packing.

I knew they hadn't been on for a goal against until game 3 against Carolina... However I'm not exactly sure that what you're saying about them being the best pair all playoffs according to the analytics...

That said, it doesn't matter what they were last week. It only matters what they are today, and today they are a liability. I know they aren't going to sit Trouba, But Jones' mobility and ability to beat the forecheck needs to be considered at this point as an upgrade on Gus. Gus has been shaky at best since he returned from his injury.

I'm hoping Chytil is ready or Rempe dresses and is able to get the crowd into it. Frankly I think the home crowd seeing Chytil will have the same effect, so either one of them will do fine.

I guess this was before game 2, but they were doing a real good job shutting teams down here. 1.15 xga/60 is rock solid, and given that they've been on the ice for 7GA since (possibly more since I think this is before game 2), you have to wonder if BrindAmour is playing the matchups well at home.

Either way, I can't/won't dispute that they were not good in Carolina. Heck, "not good" covers them too much - they were atrocious, and getting them back to steady or flipping Jones in for Gus has to be a top priority.

Also, if Chytil plays tonight, the Garden better cheer like mad every time the puck touches his stick because that kid fucking deserves to be supported after all he went through.

  4. Wonder what that looked like at MSG. That feels like BrindAmour getting a matchup to me, and in spite of Gus-Trouba not passing the eye test, they were (prior to game 3) like, the most solid D-pairing in the playoffs for the fancystats.

I'd bet Laviolette was getting his matchups right until he didn't have control of them in Carolina.
